Lohse, Brewers shut down Nationals

Jul 4, 2013 - 5:05 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Kyle Lohse tossed eight strong innings as Milwaukee downed Washington, 4-1, in the third edition of a four-game set.

Lohse (4-6) scattered four hits and allowed one run, fanning seven with just one walk. Norichika Aoki and Logan Schafer each posted a two-run hit for the Brewers, who have won two of the first three games in the series.

"Guys know I'm going to be throwing first-pitch strikes, coming at them and I think you saw a result like tonight because they know I'm coming at them," Lohse said. "I'm not trying to lay it in there, but I'm trying to make quality pitches, get ahead of them, and they were swinging."

Francisco Rodriguez left two on base in a scoreless ninth to earn his seventh save.

Anthony Rendon's solo homer was the lone offense for the Nationals, who have lost three of five and have been outscored 8-1 over the last two games.

Ross Detwiler (2-7) was tagged for eight hits and four runs -- two earned -- over six full frames.

"He pitched some great curveballs, but then I think he lost his feel of it later in the game," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "He left some curveballs up. He just didn't make the pitches when he needed to."

Detwiler stranded a runner on third in the fourth, but was burned in the fifth as Milwaukee snapped the scoreless deadlock.

Sean Halton doubled and went to third on Schafer's bunt single, but Lohse's sac bunt only moved Schafer to second. Aoki then dumped a hit to center which brought the two runners home.

Schafer tripled home two more in the sixth. Aramis Ramirez, who reached on Bryce Harper's missed catch error, and Jonathan Lucroy, who singled, both scored on the hit to make it 4-0.

Rendon's two-out shot to left put the Nats on the board in the home seventh, but Lohse retired the side in order in the eighth.

Rodriguez gave up a one-out single to Ryan Zimmerman and walked Ian Desmond with two down, but induced a game-ending fly out from Rendon.

Game Notes

Aoki finished 3-for-5, while Schafer and Lucroy both ended 2-for-4 with a run scored ... Lohse is 3-0 with four no-decisions in his last seven starts, and topped Washington for the first time since a two-hit, 5-0 shutout on April 21, 2011 while pitching for the Cardinals ... Detwiler is 0-4 over his last six starts.
