Halladay gets nod for Phils vs. Marlins

Sep 17, 2013 - 2:59 PM (Sports Network) - Former staff ace Roy Halladay can make it five straight starts without a defeat on Tuesday night when the Philadelphia Phillies host the Miami Marlins in game two of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

A three-time 20-game winner who had 19 victories as recently as 2011, Halladay has struggled with injury and ineffectiveness in the last two seasons while combining to win just 14 times in 36 starts.

He defeated Arizona, 9-5, on Aug. 25 with six innings of two-run ball and has since strung together three consecutive no-decisions while combining to pitch 15 1/3 innings and allow 11 runs.

Halladay was a 2-1 winner at Miami on April 14 and a 14-2 loser to the Marlins on May 5 in Philadelphia.

In 16 career starts against them, he is 8-5 with a 3.65 earned run average and an opposition batting average of .245.

He's opposed by mammoth southpaw Brian Flynn, who makes the third start of a three-week-old big league career.

The 23-year-old, who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 239 pounds, debuted on Sept. 4 and got a no-decision after surrendering three runs on six hits in four innings against the Chicago Cubs.

One start since resulted in a 6-1 defeat against Atlanta after Flynn was nicked for six runs and six hits in four innings.

Prior to the call-up, Flynn was 7-12 with a 2.63 ERA in 27 starts at Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans.

On Monday, Cliff Lee recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts and drove in a career-high four runs to guide the Phillies to a 12-2 win.

Lee (14-6) was spectacular on the hill, spinning eight innings while allowing just the two runs on eight hits. Perhaps more impressive was the left-hander's effort at the plate, as Lee went a career-best 3-for-4, including his first career triple.

Chase Utley and Darin Ruf homered for Philly, which won for the sixth time in its last seven home tilts. Utley also drove in the first four Phillies runs while Cesar Hernandez added two hits, two runs and an RBI.

Justin Ruggiano and Adeiny Hechavarria drove in a run apiece for Miami, which saw starter Sam Dyson (0-1) last just 2 2/3 innings. The Miami rookie, making his first start in the majors, allowed seven runs on six hits and four walks.

The Phillies won nine of the first 13 games with the Marlins this season, a year after winning the 2012 season series, 10-8.
