Reds place SS Lopez on disabled list

Jul 26, 2007 - 3:32 PM CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The Cincinnati Reds on Thursday placed shortstop Pedro Lopez on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left cheekbone.

Lopez took a fastball from Milwaukee Brewers righthander Matt Wise in the face during the eighth inning of Wednesday night's game and crashed to the ground. He lay on the ground for several minutes bleeding from the mouth and nose.

After being attended to by the trainer, Lopez was taken off the field sitting up in a cart while holding a bloody towel to his mouth and nose.

Lopez, who was hitting .184 in 11 games for the Reds this season, remained overnight for observation at The Good Samaritan Hospital and is expected to be released following an examination on Thursday.

To replace Lopez, the Reds activated infielder Juan Castro from the 15-day DL. Castro, hitting .180 in 52 games this season with the Reds, was disabled with a sprained right elbow on July 7.
