Mets' Martinez finally to make first rehab start

Aug 8, 2007 - 8:26 PM PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida (Ticker) -- Weather permitting, Pedro Martinez will finally start his return to the New York Mets.

Martinez will make his first rehab start with Class A St. Lucie of the Florida State League in a contest against Lakeland on Wednesday.

A three-time Cy Young Award winner, Martinez was originally scheduled to pitch last Wednesday, but the game was rained out. Instead, the 35-year-old threw 5 1/3 innings of a simulated game on Thursday.

Martinez is expected to throw no more than 60 pitches against the Detroit Tigers affiliate.

Martinez has yet to pitch an actual game since undergoing rotator cuff surgery on October 5.

Martinez went 9-8 with a 4.48 ERA in 23 starts for the Mets, but was sidelined during the postseason.

No one has shouted yet.
