Brewers rely on Lohse in middle tilt with Braves
Apr 1, 2014 - 2:34 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Veteran right-hander Kyle Lohse makes his 12th career start against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night when the Milwaukee Brewers visit Miller Park for the second of three games to open the 2014 regular season.Lohse, who turned 35 in October, is 4-1 in his initial 11 starts against Atlanta, including a 4-0 gem in his last outing of 2013 - when he went the full nine-inning distance at Turner Field, allowing just two hits and struck out five batters.
The win capped off his first season with the Brewers at 11-10 after he'd gone 30-11 in the previous two seasons - his last two with the St. Louis Cardinals in a stint that lasted from 2008 to 2013 and saw him win 55 games.
He's 9-7 with a 4.16 earned run average in 25 career appearances at Miller Park, where he's pitched 147 innings.
For the Braves, it's 23-year-old left-hander Alex Wood, who kicks off his second major-league season with his 12th career start.
A native of North Carolina and a product of the University of Georgia, Wood was 3-3 in 31 appearances with the Braves last season, during which he started 11 games and made 20 trips in from the bullpen.
He faced the Brewers three times in those 31 games - all in relief - and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing two hits and striking out four batters.
In Monday's opener, Aramis Ramirez's two-run double in the fourth inning proved to be the deciding factor as the Brewers defeated the Braves, 2-0.
Julio Teheran (0-1) walked Jean Segura to start off the bottom of the fourth and Ryan Braun's line-drive single to left provided the Brewers with men at first and third and no outs. Braun then stole second before Ramirez's liner down the left-field line brought both runners around to make it a 2-0 game.
Jonathan Lucroy, Scooter Gennett and Ramirez all went 2-for-3 for the Brewers.
Yovani Gallardo (1-0) surrendered four hits and two walks with four strikeouts across six scoreless innings, while Francisco Rodriguez struck out two batters in the final frame to earn the save.
Andrelton Simmons had two of the Braves' five hits in the loss.
Teheran conceded both runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts in six innings of work.
The first overturned play under the new replay challenge system occurred in the bottom of the sixth. Braun was initially called safe on a single after he grounded over to third. Chris Johnson's throw from third to first appeared to beat Braun, but first base umpire Greg Gibson deemed the runner safe. Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez quickly came out of the dugout to challenge the call. The replay showed that the throw beat Braun's foot to the bag and the replay headquarters in New York overturned the call on the field.
The Brewers won four of their six matchups with the Braves last season.
