Hudson makes first start for Giants against D'backs
Apr 2, 2014 - 2:49 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Veteran Tim Hudson will make his San Francisco Giants debut on Tuesday night when the club resumes its four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The right-hander is set to begin the 16th season of his career and first with the Giants after signing a two-year deal this offseason. Hudson, who enters this start with 205 career victories, had spent each of his previous nine campaigns with the Atlanta Braves.
Hudson will pitch in a regular-season game for the first time since suffering a fractured right ankle covering first base on July 24 that ended his season. He went 8-7 with a 3.97 earned run average in 21 games last year before his injury and went 113-72 with a 3.56 ERA in 244 games during his stint with the Braves.
The 38-year-old pitched to a 4.26 ERA in six starts during Spring Training, but has gone a solid 7-1 with a 2.18 ERA in 11 career matchups with the Diamondbacks.
While the Giants are looking forward to Hudson's debut, the Diamondbacks are hoping that Trevor Cahill can rebound from a tough start to his season.
Cahill got the call in the second of two games on March 22 versus the Los Angeles Dodgers in Australia in an early start to the season for the clubs. The 26-year-old righty struggled with his control, giving up five runs on eight hits and four walks over four-plus innings to take the loss.
Cahill will face the Giants for the 12th time in his career and is 5-3 against them lifetime with a 3.67 ERA.
Arizona found the win column for the first time in four games this season after besting San Francisco 5-4 on Tuesday. Arizona scored the tying and go- ahead runs in the sixth inning, with A.J. Pollock plating a run with a ground- run double before later scoring on Gerardo Parra's sacrifice fly.
Parra had two hits and scored a run, while Pollock finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Paul Goldschmidt and Martin Prado added an RBI each and Wade Miley settled down after allowing four first-inning runs to get the victory.
"The offense did a great job of kind of picking me up," Miley said after lasting seven innings. "I was down. I gave up the four-spot and was able to kind of overcome it. I knew if I just held it right there, we've got a pretty good lineup in here, and we'd have a pretty good chance to get back on top."
Brandon Belt hit a three-run homer, his second longball in two games this season, and Buster Posey also drove in a run for the Giants, who had won Monday's opener 9-8.
Matt Cain allow three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits over five frames in a no-decision and also was involved in a controversial play in the fourth inning.
With Pollock on third base, Cain threw a wild pitch that hit off the backstop and right to Posey, who shoveled to Cain at the plate. Pollock slid in and appeared to lift his leg over Cain's glove before touching the plate safely.
Though replays showed that Pollock had slid into Cain's glove, the Giants were unable to challenge the play as manager Bruce Bochy had already unsuccessfully challenged a pick-off play earlier in the inning.
"He was out. I had him," Cain said. "I saw what (home-plate umpire Eric) Cooper saw. He saw that it looked like he went over the plate but he went through the top of my glove to go over it."
Regardless, the Diamondbacks were able to even the four-game series after going 7-12 versus the Giants last season.
