Alvarez takes the hill for the first time since no-no

Apr 2, 2014 - 2:49 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Venezuelan-born right-hander Henderson Alvarez can make it three straight victories to start the season for the surprising Miami Marlins on Wednesday when they play the third leg of a four-game season- opening series with the Colorado Rockies at Marlins Park.

Of course, this is the first time Alvarez is taking the hill since tossing a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Detroit in the 2013 finale Sept. 29.

Alvarez won five of 11 decisions in 17 starts in his first season with the Marlins after he was part of a 12-player trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.

The 23-year-old allowed just 90 hits and 42 runs in 102 2/3 innings of work, posting a 3.59 earned run average and holding opposition batters to a .237 average. He compiled a 1.61 ERA over his final four outings, but settled for a 2-2 record since he was backed by seven total runs.

He is 3-5 in nine career starts in Miami, where he's held opposition batters to a .220 average in 58 innings.

Alvarez has never faced the Rockies.

The Marlins won Monday's opener behind a strong outing from starter Jose Fernandez and made it two straight on Tuesday when Casey McGehee's sixth- inning RBI single proved to be the difference in a 4-3 decision.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Adeiny Hechavarria and Giancarlo Stanton also knocked in runs for the Marlins, who made a winner out of Nathan Eovaldi (1-0).

Eovaldi scattered six hits over six innings, allowing two runs with six strikeouts.

Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez each had an RBI double and scored a run for the Rockies.

Brett Anderson (0-1), who spent his first five seasons with Oakland before being traded in the offseason, took the loss after allowing four runs -- three earned -- over six innings.

For Colorado, right-hander Jordan Lyles makes his debut for a team that acquired him in an offseason trade that sent Dexter Fowler to the Houston Astros.

Lyles was 14-29 in 72 games with Houston across three seasons, including 65 starts.

He was expected to begin the 2014 season at Triple-A Colorado Springs after losing a duel for the fifth starting slot to Franklin Morales, but was recalled for a spot assignment when Tyler Chatwood was scratched with a strained hamstring.

Lyles posted a 3.18 ERA in 17 innings of work in spring training and lost his lone career start against the Marlins.

The Marlins edged out the Rockies, 4-3, in the season series a year ago.
