Blackmon's 6-for-6 effort boosts Rockies
Apr 5, 2014 - 4:56 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Charlie Blackmon went 6-for-6 and was a triple shy of the cycle to guide the Colorado Rockies to a home-opening 12-2 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.Blackmon had three doubles and a two-run homer and picked up five RBI for Colorado. Carlos Gonzalez drove in four as he went 2-for-4 with a triple and a two-run homer. Michael Cuddyer, Troy Tulowitzki and Charlie Culberson picked up an RBI apiece.
Blackmon's six hits tied the franchise record set by Andres Galarraga on July 3, 1995, in a game against Houston.
"I guess (Galarraga) had a six-hit game here in 1995 and I would have been here if it was '95. I don't remember but I thought it was the first 6-for-6 I had seen," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Blackmon's performance.
Colorado starter Juan Nicasio (1-0) hurled seven quality frames, fanning six and walking one, while allowing four hits and one run.
Paul Goldschmidt had an RBI single, moving his hit streak to 26 games dating back to last season. It's the longest active streak and second-longest in Diamondbacks history, behind Luis Gonzalez' 30 games in 1999.
Mark Trumbo went 2-for-4 with a solo home run for Arizona, which saw starter Randall Delgado (0-1) get knocked around for 10 hits and six runs through four-plus innings.
"Fastball command is essential to every body and Randall (Delgado) couldn't do it," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said of his starter's struggles. "We were trying to get the ball in certain places and we couldn't get it there and the Rockies made us pay for it."
Cuddyer got the Rockies going in the second inning when he a singled in Blackmon after his leadoff double.
Colorado struck again in the third with three runs. Blackmon and Cuddyer hit back-to-back singles before a Gonzalez triple plated the pair. Tulowitzki then ripped a single up the middle to score Gonzalez.
The Rockies kept it rolling in the fourth when Blackmon hit a two-run blast to right field after DJ LeMahieu led off with a single.
Arizona got on the board when Trumbo went deep to make the score 6-1 after five frames.
In the sixth inning Cuddyer was able to reach base on error before Gonzalez homered to right field.
Colorado picked up two more runs in the seventh. Brandon Barnes hit a two-out pinch-hit triple and Blackmon drove him in with a single. After a single by Cuddyer and a Gonzalez walk, Culberson was hit by a pitch to plate Blackmon.
Arizona scored its final run in the eighth when Goldschmidt drove in Gerardo Parra, who reached base on a wild third strike before a double by Aaron Hill.
LeMahieu worked a two-out walk and reached second on a balk by Oliver Perez. Barnes was then walked before Blackmon doubled down the left field line to bring LaMahieu home and round out the scoring for Colorado.
