Skaggs, Angels top Astros

Apr 6, 2014 - 5:19 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Skaggs tossed eight innings to help the LA Angels of Anaheim to a 5-1 win over the Houston Astros on Saturday.

Skaggs (1-0) gave up four hits and an unearned run along with a walk and five strikeouts. Josh Hamilton homered for a second straight game as the Angels have taken the first two of this set after getting swept by Seattle to start the season.

"Just small changes I've made that will help me throw more strikes," said Skaggs. "I think all of that clicked today and hopefully I'll continue to grow."

Dallas Keuchel (0-1) gave up four runs on eight hits over five innings for the Astros, who have lost three straight after opening the season with a pair of wins over the Yankees.

"I think we need to be a little more patient because he was able to expand his strike zone since we were swinging at a lot of pitches," said Houston head coach Bo Porter.

Houston grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Jose Altuve singled with two outs, stole second and came home after Jesus Guzman reached base thanks to a bad play from John McDonald.

The Angels, though, got the run back in the second after David Freese singled to start the inning and later came home on a Howie Kendrick double.

In the fifth, the Angels went on top with a three-run frame. Collin Cowgill led off with a double and came home three batters later on a Freese single. Hamilton followed with his second home run in as many days for a 4-1 advantage.

Los Angeles padded its lead in the eighth as Erick Aybar led off the frame with a triple and scored two batters later on Kole Calhoun's single to left to make it a 5-1 game.

Joe Smith pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the contest.
