D'backs aim to get off the schneid in Colorado
Apr 6, 2014 - 2:18 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks try to avoid a fifth straight loss on Sunday when they conclude a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.Arizona's early season struggles continued on Saturday, as Nolan Arenado hit a pair of solo homers, drove in three and Colorado came back from an early deficit to post a 9-4 win. Michael Cuddyer added a two-run dinger, D.J. LeMahieu knocked in a pair and Carlos Gonzalez and Jordan Pacheco each had an RBI for the Rockies, who have won three of their last four.
Charlie Blackmon, after going 6-for-6 in the home opener win for the Rockies on Friday, singled in his first at-bat Saturday and finished 3-for-4 with a run scored in the win.
"You can't get too caught up with the results after three, four, five games so just stay the course," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss of Arenado's start to the season. "He's showing signs of maturity, but it's a great way to bust out."
Tommy Kahnle (1-0) worked 1 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit in relief of Jorge De La Rosa to pick up the win.
Mark Trumbo homered for the fourth time on the young season for the Diamondbacks, who lost for the seventh time in their first eight games.
Also, Paul Goldschmidt's 26-game hitting streak that dated back to last season was snapped as the slugger finished 0-for-2 with two walks for the Diamondbacks.
Arizona's Brandon McCarthy (0-1), also making his second start of 2014, surrendered six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk over six innings.
The D'backs stand a good chance at getting off the schneid on Sunday, as left- hander Wade Miley is 6-0 lifetime versus the Rockies with a 2.56 ERA in nine games (8 starts). He beat them twice last season and pitched to a 1.45 ERA in the process.
Miley has Arizona's lone win this season, as he beat the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, holding them to four runs and six hits in seven innings, He had lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Australia and is 1-1 on the year with a 5.25 ERA.
Colorado, meanwhile, will turn to lefty Brett Anderson, who lost his debut with the Rockies on Tuesday. The Miami Marlins reached him for four runs (3 earned) and five hits over six innings in that one.
Sunday's outing will be Anderson's first-ever at Coors Field.
"I'm just going to take it like another start," Anderson said. "If you dwell on whether my pitches are going to move or not move as much as normal, you're going to worry yourself sick. You don't want to be thinking too much out there. You want to go out there and be human. If something doesn't work out, you try to figure out why it doesn't and move onto the next. You can't dwell on the elements or what have you. You have to be on your game."
Arizona was 12-7 last season versus the Rockies.
