Wainwright tries to deliver in Pittsburgh
Apr 6, 2014 - 2:18 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Wainwright wanted to set the tone for the St. Louis Cardinals on Opening Day. He did just that and now will go after his second win in as many starts on Sunday when the St. Louis Cardinals close out a three-game series versus the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.Wainwright was terrific on Monday in Cincinnati, as he scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings. He also struck out nine, while walking just one batter.
"It was me wanting to go out there and set the tone better than I did in the World Series," Wainwright said. "I was thinking about Game 1 in Boston, and I knew that I did not pitch the way I could have or should have. I wanted to come out here and pitch a good game and set the tone for the rest of the season moving forward."
Wainwright has faced the Pirates 22 times (18 starts) and is 9-4 with a 4.81 ERA.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, will counter with righty Edinson Volquez, who spent last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, going 9-12 with a 5.71 ERA in 33 games, all but one as a starter.
Volquez, who was a miserable 0-3 with a 9.64 ERA this spring, debuted for the Pirates in a loss to Chicago on Thursday with two scoreless innings of relief.
St. Louis finally figured out Francisco Liriano on Saturday, as Yadier Molina smacked a solo homer among his two hits and the Cardinals cruised to a 6-1 win.
Jhonny Peralta added a two-run shot and Matt Carpenter scored a pair of runs for the Cardinals, who are off to a 3-2 start. Joe Kelly (1-0) allowed a run on six hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win.
Liriano (0-1) went 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA against St. Louis last season and was coming off a 10-strikeout performance over six scoreless frames in a no decision against the Chicago Cubs Monday, but surrendered four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings Saturday.
"He caught a lot of the plate with his pitches tonight," Molina said.
Travis Snyder had two of Pittsburgh's six hits. The Pirates went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.
"We had opportunities to cash in and we weren't able to do it," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said
The Pirates won 10 of 19 versus the Cardinals last season, winning seven of the 10 meetings in Pittsburgh.
