Red Sox down Rangers, earn first home win of 2014
Apr 8, 2014 - 6:11 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jackie Bradley finished with three hits and drove in a pair of runs, as Boston eclipsed Texas, 5-1, in the first of three between the clubs at Fenway Park.Daniel Nava and Dustin Pedroia each knocked in a run, while A.J. Pierzynski added three hits and scored twice for the Red Sox, who were coming off three straight home losses to Milwaukee but won their first at home this season thanks to a 14-hit attack.
John Lackey (2-0) allowed a single unearned run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts over seven solid innings.
"He showed why he's one of the best pitchers in the American League. He made us swing the bats," said Rangers manager Ron Washignton. "We had some situations where we could have broken through, but couldn't get the base hits."
Shin-Soo Choo and Alex Rios collected a pair of hits and Mitch Moreland drove in the lone run for the Rangers, who had dropped two of three over the weekend at Tampa Bay.
Tanner Scheppers (0-1) pitched well in defeat, giving up two runs on nine hits over five full frames.
The Sox picked up valuable insurance runs in their last turn at the plate. Pierzynski led off with a single, Jonathan Herrera walked and Prince Fielder's throwing error on a Bradley bunt plated Pierzynski for a 3-1 game, and left runners on the corners. Nava singled off Shawn Tolleson to bring in Herrera, then a Pedroia fielder's choice made it 5-1.
Koji Uehara gave up two hits in the ninth, but held the Rangers off the board to preserve the winning margin.
Boston got on the board in the home second. Xander Bogaerts and Pierzynski singled with one down and, after a Herrera foul out, Bradley chased home Bogaerts on a base hit.
In the fourth, Adrian Beltre and Rios singled with one out and advanced on a passed ball, before Moreland's fly to right evened the score.
Bradley restored the hosts' one-goal edge in the home half, plating Pierzynski on a single after the Boston catcher singled and went to second on a Herrera base hit.
"[John Lackey] pitched a great game tonight. I was very fortunate enough to make those plays for him," said Bradley. "To come through with hits in those situations, they get through the hole and I'm happy to put some runs on the board for the pitcher."
Game Notes
Prior to the contest, the Rangers placed pitcher Joe Saunders on the 15-day disabled list and recalled pitcher Daniel McCutchen from Double-A Frisco ...
