Rangers score early, hold on late to beat BoSox

Apr 9, 2014 - 4:04 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Prince Fielder, Adrian Beltre, Donnie Murphy and Robinson Chirinos all drove in two runs, as Texas scored early and often to post a 10-7 decision over Boston in the middle test of a three-game set from Fenway Park.

Shin-Soo Choo contributed two hits, an RBI and scored a pair of runs for the Rangers, who have won two of their last three and shook off a loss in Monday's opener.

Buoyed by his offense, Martin Perez (1-0) did enough to get the win, working 6 1/3 innings and yielding four runs on eight hits.

Jackie Bradley and David Ortiz drove in two, while Mike Napoli added three hits and an RBI and A.J. Pierzynski went 3-for-4, knocked in one and crossed home twice for the Red Sox, who fell to 1-4 at home this season.

"Once we're down five, even though we got a number of leadoff hitters on base, we've got to be a little bit protective of just giving away outs," Boston manager John Farrell said.

Felix Doubront (1-1) didn't make it out of the third inning, charged with six hits and five runs with three walks over 2 2/3 frames.

The Sox got three back in the seventh to shrink their deficit to 9-4 on a Pierzynski single and two-run double from Bradley.

Jim Adduci began the Texas ninth with a double, Alex Rios singled but was erased on a fielder's choice which left runners on the corners, then Michael Choice knocked in his club's 10th run on a fly to center.

With one last shot to come back, Boston tacked on three more in the ninth. Pierzynski singled and Bradley's one-out base hit moved him to second, before he scored on a Jonny Gomes single. Ortiz then brought in two with a two-out double and it was 10-7, but Napoli fanned to end the contest.

The Rangers chased Doubront with a five-run third.

Chirinos began the frame with his first homer of the season, then Choo singled with one out. Fielder doubled with two down to chase home Choo and Beltre followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 game. Rios singled and Murphy's double plated Beltre, then Choice walked to load the bases and Chirinos' base on balls forced in Rios.

Burke Badenhop got the final out of the frame, but was on the hook for three more in the fourth on an RBI single from Fielder, a run-scoring double from Beltre and a sacrifice fly by Murphy for an 8-0 game.

Dustin Pedroia began the home fourth with a double and scored on Napoli's one- out single, but Texas responded in the following frame with a Choo double to score Chirinos which restored the eight-run cushion.

"Those guys have taken a lot of ballgames away, so every time you get an opportunity to put a run on the board you want to do it," Rangers manager Ron Washington said.

Game Notes

Chirinos hit just one other homer in his career, on Aug. 3, 2011, for Tampa Bay against Toronto in a 9-1 victory ... Texas tied a season high for runs in a game, having racked up the same in a 14-10 Opening Day loss to the Phillies.
