White Sox clobber Rockies
Apr 9, 2014 - 6:19 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia both clubbed a pair of homers to lead the Chicago White Sox in a 15-3 pounding of the Colorado Rockies in the middle tilt of a three-game interleague set.Abreu finished with five RBI and Garcia recorded four hits and drove in three.
Alexei Ramirez and Tyler Flowers also clubbed homers for the White Sox, winners in two of their last three games.
Jose Quintana (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings to earn the win.
Michael Cuddyer went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and Troy Tulowitzki added a pair of RBI for the Rockies, who were out-hit 19-7.
Franklin Morales (0-1) allowed six runs on eight hits and four walks over 6 1/3 innings to absorb the loss.
The White Sox scored three runs in the second inning. Garcia crushed a two-out homer to left and after Ramirez singled, Flowers hammered a two-run shot to left field.
With runners on the corners in the third, Dayan Viciedo lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Adam Eaton.
Cuddyer got the Rockies on the board in the fourth with his third homer of the season and Tulowitzki added an RBI double in the sixth to make it 4-2.
Chicago broke the game open with three runs in the seventh and six in the eighth.
With two on and one out in the seventh, Abreu just barely cleared the wall in left for a 7-2 lead. The ball sailed just over Brett Barnes' glove as the left-fielder attempted to rob the rookie of the homer, but came up empty.
"That at-bat was very, very important to me," Abreu said
In the eighth, Garcia and Ramirez hit back-to-back homers against Wilton Lopez to make it 9-2. With two outs later in the frame, Marcus Semien doubled to left to score Flowers. Abreu followed with a homer to right-center. Garcia capped the frame with an RBI base hit to right field for an 11-run lead.
"I don't like to leave a guy out there as long as I did, or take him out in the middle of the inning and have him walk off the field," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "He's always a guy that's up for the challenge and be in there in good times or tough times."
Tulowitzki added a sacrifice fly in the eighth and Semien and Viciedo had RBI singles in the ninth to account for the final difference.
Game Notes
