Mariners, Angels close brief set at Safeco

Apr 9, 2014 - 2:39 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Seattle's Roenis Elias tries to follow up a terrific major league debut on Wednesday when the Mariners wrap up a brief two-game set against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Safeco Field.

The only thing missing from Elias' major league debut in Oakland on Thursday was a win, as the 25-year-old left-hander allowed just a run and two hits over five innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 3-2 loss.

"I was very excited, especially with the support I got from my teammates and coaches," said Elias, who was pitching Double-A ball last year. "It was a beautiful thing, something I won't ever forget in my life."

Los Angeles, meanwhile, will counter with righty Garrett Richards, who was also solid on Friday in Houston, as he surrendered one run and three hits in five innings to get the win. However, he did walk five batters.

Richards has faced the Mariners 11 times (3 starts) and is 2-2 with a 3.55 ERA.

It was a new face that guided the Mariners to a win in the home opener on Monday. However, it wasn't the one everyone thought it would be, though. Corey Hart smacked two homers, including a three-run shot as part of a four- run Seattle third, and the Mariners beat the Angels, 5-3.

"It was nice to find contact tonight and be able to help out. I was getting kind of tired watching everyone else help out," Hart said.

It was 3-0 in favor of the Halos going into the third and Hector Santiago (0-2) recorded two quick outs before Brad Miller struck out swinging, but advanced to first on a wild pitch.

Robinson Cano, who went 0-for-3 in his home debut, then walked and Justin Smoak's base hit plated Miller. Hart lined a three-run shot into the left field seats to put Seattle in front.

Hart launched a solo shot to center in the seventh to make it 5-3 and Fernando Rodney fired a scoreless ninth to notch his second save of the year.

James Paxton (2-0) yielded three runs on four hits over five innings to pick up the win for Seattle, which swept the season-opening, three-game series against the Angels.
