Mets slip past Braves
Apr 11, 2014 - 3:58 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Young Jr. and Daniel Murphy each had three hits and New York's bullpen tossed four scoreless innings in relief of Jenrry Mejia to carry the Mets to a 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves in the rubber match of a three-game series from Turner Field.Young did it all for the Mets, stealing three bags and scoring four times while Murphy finished with three runs batted in. David Wright, Ike Davis and Juan Lagares also drove in a run apiece to help New York win its fourth game in the last six following an 0-3 start to the season.
"It was huge, especially winning the series against the defending N.L. East champs," said Young.
Mejia struck out seven but allowed four runs on six hits and four walks over five frames. Three New York relievers held Atlanta to just a hit over the final four innings. Carlos Torres (2-0) struck out three in two innings, Kyle Farnsworth tossed a perfect eighth and Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his second save of the season.
Justin Upton finished 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs for Atlanta, which got just 4 1/3 innings from starter David Hale. The righty yielded four runs -- three earned -- on five hits and five walks. Luis Avilan (1-1) took the loss after allowing Lagares' RBI single in the seventh, which proved to be the difference.
"Just one of those days," said Hale. "I didn't have command of the fastball at all. I had to battle the whole time. It's tough to do that the entire game."
Aided by Ryan Doumit's throwing error, New York manufactured a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. Young led off the contest with a single, stole second and easily took third when Doumit's throw to second sailed past the bag and into center field. Murphy then grounded out to first, allowing Young to trot home without a throw.
After Upton's second inning homer tied it, the Mets put two runs across in the third. Wright's RBI single highlighted the frame, and Murphy scored two batters later on Davis' dribbler back to the mound.
Atlanta briefly took the lead with three runs in the home half. B.J. Upton tripled with one out and scored on a Freddie Freeman single to center. Two batters later, Justin Upton connected on his second long ball of the game that traveled an estimated 477 feet. It was the longest home run at Turner Field since Sept, 2010.
Young tripled to start the fifth and Murphy drove him in with a single to left. The Mets put runners on second and third with one out in the frame, but Anthony Varvaro relieved Hale and got the final two outs to keep it knotted at 4-4 until the seventh.
Murphy singled to start the seventh, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third, allowing him to come home on Lagares' two-out single. Murphy's RBI double with two gone in the eighth resulted in the final tally.
Game Notes
Atlanta third baseman Chris Johnson went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts ... The Mets went 4-for-15 with runners in scoring position while the Braves hit just 2-for-10 with RISP.
