Bumgarner makes first home start in opener with Rox
Apr 11, 2014 - 1:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner makes his first home start of the season on Friday when the San Francisco Giants open a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at AT&T Park.Bumgarner picked up his first win of the season and 50th of his career on Saturday in Los Angeles, as he held the Dodgers to a pair of runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 frames. He also struck out 10 batters and improved to 1-0 to go along with a 1.74 ERA.
Now he returns home, where he was 8-6 with a 3.12 ERA in 17 starts a year ago.
Bumgarner will be trying to get San Francisco back on track Friday, as the Giants enter this series having dropped three of its last four after falling to Arizona on Thursday, 6-5, in 10 innings.
Michael Morse supplied a pair of RBI in the loss, while Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford each collected two hits and an RBI for the Giants, who lost their first series of the season and fell to 6-3 on the year.
"It was a fight until the end," Morse remarked. "They wanted it as bad as we did. It was like a boxing match out there."
Colorado, meanwhile, now hits the road for seven games after going 4-2 on its most recent homestand. It closed out the stand in winning fashion on Wednesday, as DJ LeMahieu tied the game with an RBI double in the sixth inning and hit a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth, leading the Rockies to a 10-4 win over the Chicago White Sox.
LeMahieu's hit in the eighth keyed a six-run rally that broke the game wide open. He had three hits and scored twice for the Rockies, who took the first and third games to win their second straight series.
"With the infield in I was just trying to elevate something," said LeMahieu. "He threw the sinker but I think he left it up a little bit. I was just lucky to hit it hard."
Getting the call for the Rockies on Friday will be lefty Jorge De La Rosa, who is 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA. After a shaky season debut, De La Rosa wasn't much better in a no-decision on Saturday against Arizona, as he allowed four runs (3 earned) and four hits in 4 1/3 innings. He also walked three batters and has issued five free passes in 8 2/3 innings this season.
"They made me work a lot," De La Rosa said. "They made me throw a lot of pitches. I started pretty good, but after that I think I was overthrowing, and my location wasn't there. I wasn't thinking; I was just throwing the ball."
De La Rosa has faced the Giants 19 times (16 starts) and is 8-4 with a 3.90 ERA.
San Francisco was 10-9 versus the Rockies last season.
