Ryu hopes to bounce back in Arizona

Apr 11, 2014 - 2:08 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu makes his fourth start of 2014 on Friday night when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit Chase Field for the start of a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ryu suffered through the shortest start of his big-league career in his last outing one week ago, being chased from the mound after allowing eight runs and recording only six outs in an 8-4 loss to San Francisco.

He'd been lights out in his initial two outings of the season in March, tossing five shutout innings against the Diamondbacks in the schedule-opening series in Australia back on March 23, then going seven innings without a run in a 3-1 triumph over San Diego seven days later.

He's split four decisions in six career starts against Arizona.

Right-hander Brandon McCarthy gets the call for the Diamondbacks for the third time this season.

He's been hit hard in both of his first two starts, allowing six runs in six innings against Colorado on Saturday - after he'd been nicked for five runs in 6 2/3 innings against San Francisco on March 31.

In three career meetings with the Dodgers, he's been very effective, posting a 2.79 earned run average and winning two decisions.

On Thursday in San Francisco, Tony Campana plated the go-ahead run with a two- out single in the top of the 10th inning, as the Diamondbacks earned a 6-5 win over the Giants in the rubber match of a three-game set at AT&T Park.

Campana was credited with four hits on the night, including a base hit in the eighth that helped tie the game at 5-5.

With runners on first and second and two away in the eighth, Campana hit a slow roller to third that Pablo Sandoval fielded, but the third baseman's rushed throw to first sailed high, allowing Gerardo Parra to score from second to tie the game. In the 10th, Cliff Pennington stroked a one-out single off Yusmeiro Petit (0-1) before swiping second with Campana at the plate two batters later.

The speedy center fielder then slapped a single just over the head of second baseman Brandon Hicks and Pennington raced home for the deciding run.

Addison Reed retired the Giants in order in the bottom of the 10th to secure his third save of the season. J.J. Putz (1-0) picked up the win after spinning a perfect bottom of the ninth.

Pennington finished with three hits, two RBI and a run scored, while Miguel Montero registered two hits, two RBI and a run scored for the Diamondbacks, who have won three of their last four games.

On Wednesday in Los Angeles, Victor Martinez homered in the top of the 10th inning to help the Detroit Tigers split a two-game series with a 7-6 win over the Dodgers.

Dee Gordon went 3-for-5, Carl Crawford had two doubles with a run scored and Andre Ethier also knocked in a run for LA, which had its two-game winning streak snapped.

Josh Beckett, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game, made the start for LA and surrendered five runs -- four earned -- over four innings with five strikeouts and a walk.

Los Angeles, of course, swept the Diamondbacks in the season-opening two-game set in Australia. The D'backs, though, were 10-9 in the series a year ago.
