Gonzalez leads Dodgers in rout of Diamondbacks

Apr 12, 2014 - 5:52 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Adrian Gonzalez drove in five runs and Hyun- Jin Ryu combined with Jamey Wright on a two-hit shutout, as the Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Chase Field.

Gonzalez launched a two-run homer in the first, stroked a two-run single in the third and added a run-scoring single in the eighth to provide more than enough support for Ryu (2-1), who struck out eight over seven stellar innings of two-hit, one-walk ball.

With Ryu at 99 pitches through seven frames, Wright took over on the mound and struck out the side in the eighth before working around a leadoff walk in the ninth to nail down the Dodgers' third win in four tries.

"Just what we needed as far as being able to get some guys a day off in the bullpen," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Jamey Wright gives us two good innings, Hyun-Jin looked sharp, really what we expected."

Hanley Ramirez registered three hits, three runs scored and an RBI for Los Angeles, which returned to Chase Field for the first time since celebrating their 2013 NL West crown by jumping into the pool in right-center field.

Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy (0-2) surrendered all six runs on 10 hits and a walk over seven innings. Miguel Montero collected the Diamondbacks' only two hits, as Arizona failed to move a runner into scoring position in the setback.

"Their guy Ryu pitched a heck of a game," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson admitted of the LA left-hander. "I'm not going to take anything away from him. All things considered, he threw a great game and we had no answer for him tonight."

Gonzalez put the Dodgers on top in their first turn at-bat, as he followed Ramirez's two-out single with a drive over the wall in right-center field.

The LA slugger doubled the margin in the third, with his one-out single to center scoring Yasiel Puig and Ramirez, who scorched a double to left prior to Gonzalez's two-run base hit that made it 4-0.

The visitors increased their cushion in the eighth, as Puig stroked a leadoff double and Ramirez followed with a two-bagger of his own to make it 5-0. Gonzalez followed with a single to left to score Ramirez.
