Lackey eyes third straight win in the Bronx
Apr 12, 2014 - 1:10 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - John Lackey shoots for his third win of the season on Saturday when the Boston Red Sox continue a three-game series with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.Lackey appears to be all the way back from Tommy John surgery that cost him the entire 2012 campaign. The right-hander got better as the year wore on last year and has been terrific through two starts this season, going 2-0, while allowing just two earned runs in 13 innings.
His latest win came on Monday against Texas, as he limited the Rangers to just one unearned run over seven innings to lower his ERA to 1.38.
"The last start in Spring Training and first two this season have been powerful and clean," said Boston manager John Farrell. "He's done a great job of commanding his fastball. He's been efficient. To see how he's come off the Tommy John (surgery) and how he's carried his stamina throughout 190, 200 innings last year including the postseason, it's a testament to his work ethic."
Lackey, though, has struggled in three starts at the new Yankee Stadium, posting a 1-1 mark to go along with a 7.64 ERA.
New York, meanwhile, will hand the ball to Japanese right-hander Hiroki Kuroda, who is 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA. Kuroda earned his first win of the season Monday against Baltimore, as he allowed two runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
"He's consistent," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He's been consistent ever since he's been here, whether it has been regular season or postseason. It's kind of what you expect."
Kuroda is just 3-5 lifetime versus the Red Sox with a 4.05 ERA in 12 starts.
After losing Thursday's opener, Boston bounced back on Friday, as Grady Sizemore belted a three-run homer to back 6 2/3 solid innings from Jon Lester in the Red Sox' 4-2 win.
Both Sizemore and Jonny Gomes, who added a solo homer during Boston's four-run sixth inning, finished with two hits in the win.
"It was good to have a rally there in that inning," said Sizemore. "We've kind of struggled with Jon on the mound. It's nice to pick him up and get some runs for him."
Lester (1-2) shook off an early homer to Alfonso Soriano to limit the Yankees to two runs on six hits while striking out six and earning his first win of the season.
CC Sabathia (1-2) fanned nine over seven innings for New York, but gave up both Boston homers to absorb the loss.
"I'm light years ahead of where I was last year," Sabathia said. "As far as (stuff) I feel like I'm getting close."
Boston may be without closer Koji Uehara on Saturday. Uehara missed Friday's contest with stiffness in his shoulder.
Boston was 13-6 versus the Yankees last season.
