Diamondbacks turn to Arroyo vs. Mets
Apr 15, 2014 - 3:11 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Veteran right-hander Bronson Arroyo makes his third start for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night when they play game two of a three-game series with the visiting New York Mets at Chase Field.Arroyo, who'd been with the Cincinnati Reds since 2006, signed with Arizona as a free agent in the offseason and picked up his first win in a Diamondbacks uniform on Wednesday, when he tossed five innings and allowed three runs in a 6-3 defeat of San Francisco.
It was a slightly longer outing than his first start, which lasted 4 1/3 innings and saw him give up two runs to the Giants on April 3. Arroyo suffered a bulging disk in his back during spring training and is being handled delicately.
He's 8-3 in 14 career starts against the Mets with a 3.63 earned run average and three complete games.
New York counters Arroyo with Jenrry Mejia, who makes his third start of 2014.
He picked up a win over the Reds in his first start on April 4 after striking out eight batters in six innings, then gave up four runs in five innings while getting a no-decision in New York's 6-4 win at Atlanta on Thursday.
Mejia has never faced Arizona.
On Monday, Lucas Duda tied a career-high with four hits and also drove in two runs to help the Mets to a 7-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
David Wright also had two RBI and Curtis Granderson drove in a run before leaving the game in the sixth inning after a collision with the right-field wall.
Miguel Montero opened the scoring in the first with a deep drive to right field. Granderson made an attempt for the ball and did catch it until colliding into the fence in right. Granderson grimaced in pain but did stay in the game until being replaced by Andrew Brown in the sixth.
Mets starter Zack Wheeler (1-2) earned his first victory of the season after hurling 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks. New York has won two of its last three.
Montero went 3-for-3 with all three RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have lost four straight.
Josh Collmenter (0-1), who made his first start of the season for Arizona, pitched four innings and allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts before giving way to Mike Bolsinger. Bolsinger made his major-league debut and went three innings, allowing two runs with three strikeouts.
The Mets have won four of seven versus the Diamondbacks in each of the previous two seasons.
