Gyorko, Padres continue set with Rockies
Apr 15, 2014 - 3:12 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - San Diego second baseman Jedd Gyorko is off to a slow start. The Padres don't seem to mind, though, as they locked him up to a five- year extension on Monday worth $35 million. The deal will keep Gyorko in San Diego through 2019 and contains an option for 2020.
"It's good to have the possibility and potential to pencil Jedd into the lineup for a long time," San Diego manager Bud Black said.
Gyorko and the Padres go after their third straight win on Tuesday when they continue a four-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park.
The 25-year-old Gyorko was 0-for-3 on Monday and saw his average dip to .152, but San Diego scored twice in the eighth thanks to a wild pitch and an errant throw in its 5-4 win.
Huston Street then worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Tommy Medica, Everth Cabrera and Alexi Amarista each drove in a run for the Padres, who have won four of five.
Eric Stults pitched five innings and gave up four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits. Dale Thayer (2-0) got the win for firing a perfect eighth.
"We talked about before the game being patient and if you look at the whole game I think we did that," said Black. "We got a good start from Stults and the bullpen did a fantastic job."
Wilin Rosario blasted a two-run shot while Troy Tulowitzki and DJ LeMahieu each drove in a run for the Rockies, who have dropped three of four. Jordan Lyles gave up three runs on six hits over five innings of work.
To make matters worse, Colorado also lost right fielder Michael Cuddyer to a right elbow injury as he crashed into the wall and banged his elbow on the ground while trying to make a play on an Amarista triple in the fifth inning.
"I probably could have finished the inning, but 10 minutes later I could hardly move," Cuddyer said.
Cuddyer was diagnosed with an elbow contusion and is listed as day-to-day.
Getting the call for the Padres on Tuesday will be lefty Robbie Erlin, who was terrific in his first start in Cleveland on Wednesday. Erlin gave up a run and four hits in six innings of that one, as he improved to 1-0 to go along with a 1.35 ERA.
Colorado, meanwhile, will counter with righty Juan Nicasio, who is 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA. Nicasio didn't get a decision on Wednesday against Chicago, as he allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings of his team's 10-4 loss.
Nicasio has dominated the Padres over the course of his career, going 2-0 with a 2.87 ERA in five starts.
Colorado went 12-7 versus San Diego last season.
Prior to the game as part of the Major Leagues-wide Jackie Robinson Day celebration, San Diego will have 42 youngsters from the Jackie Robinson YMCA lining the first-base line in Padres No. 42 jerseys.
