Rockies edge Padres
Apr 16, 2014 - 7:11 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Juan Nicasio tossed six strong innings and the Colorado Rockies took a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres in the second of a three-game set.Nicasio (2-0) gave up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts, while Wilin Rosario, Nolan Arenado and DJ LeMahieu each drove in a run for the Rockies, who rebounded from Monday's disappointing loss.
"We needed Juan to get through that sixth, that was critical. I was a little concerned at that point, but he settled in," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
In Monday's opener, the Padres scored two runs on a wild pitch and a bad throw in the eighth inning to take the game, 5-4.
Robbie Erlin (1-1) gave up all three runs on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts for the Padres, who had won four of five coming in. Seth Smith and Jedd Gyorko each drove in a run.
"The second time through the lineup, I just felt myself trying to do too much, overthrowing. That's when I lose command of the ball," Erlin said.
San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Will Venable led off with a double and Alexi Amarista followed with a single. Singles from Seth Smith and Gyorko plated a run each.
Colorado got a run back in the second. Troy Tulowitzki led off with a single and Rosario followed with a base hit. The next two batters struck out, but LeMahieu punched a hit to right to make it a 2-1 game.
In the fourth, the Rockies tied the game as Tulowitzki doubled, moved to third on Rosario's single and came home thanks to Arenado's sacrifice fly.
Colorado then took the lead in the fifth inning. With two outs, Michael Cuddyer kept the inning alive with a single and Carlos Gonzalez worked a walk to chase Erlin from the mound.
Tim Stauffer took the hill and walked Tulowitzki to load the bases. Rosario then hit a chopper back to the mound that Stauffer tried to get a hold of, but he deflected it and Cuddyer scored for a 3-2 lead.
Nicasio stranded a runner on second in the sixth, while Chad Bettis put two men on with two outs before handing the ball to Boone Logan, who walked Xavier Nady to load the bases, but then got Amarista to hit into a fielder's choice and end the frame.
LaTroy Hawkins gave up a one-out infield single to Chris Denorfia in the ninth, but then got Nick Hundley to swing at the first pitch for a 5-4-3 double play to earn his third save of the season.
