Fernandez hopes for some more home cooking versus Nationals

Apr 16, 2014 - 2:45 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Young right-hander Jose Fernandez can remain unbeaten in his home stadium on Wednesday when the Miami Marlins host the Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game series at Marlins Park.

Just 21 years old, Fernandez is 11-0 in 17 career starts in Miami with an ultra-stingy 1.14 earned run average.

He began 2014 with a pair of victories at home while allowing a single run in 12 2/3 innings, but was beaten 6-3, at Philadelphia on Friday.

In that game, Fernandez was touched for eight hits and six runs in four innings.

He started twice against Washington in 2013 and surrendered just one run while striking out 13 in 13 innings.

Miami ended an eight-game losing streak on Tuesday, as Tom Koehler tossed seven scoreless innings, while Giancarlo Stanton finished 2-for-4 with a three-run blast and drove in five runs as Miami battered Washington, 11-2.

The teams emptied the benches in the fourth inning after Washington's Ian Desmond spat toward Koehler after he was nearly hit with a pitch, then exchanged words with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Koehler (2-1) issued five walks, but fanned three and allowed one hit to complement an offense which set a new season-high for runs scored.

Zach Walters homered for the Nationals, who have dropped four of their last five.

Stephen Strasburg (1-2) exited after four full frames, having given up eight hits and six runs along with three walks and five strikeouts.

On Wednesday, the Nationals start right-hander Tanner Roark, who lasted just 4 2/3 innings of a game Washington lost to Atlanta, 7-6, on Friday.

Roark gave up five of the runs before the game stretched into extra innings.

He started once and relieved twice against the Marlins in 2013, earning a 9-2 victory in the lone start after allowing just four hits in six scoreless innings.
