Padres eye series win vs. Rockies

Apr 17, 2014 - 2:38 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres look to record their sixth victory in eight games on Thursday evening as they conclude a four-game series with the Colorado Avalanche.

After splitting the first two games of the series, the Padres set themselves up for at least a split by taking last night's contest 4-2. Andrew Cashner followed up a one-hit performance his last time out by holding the Rockies to a pair of runs -- one earned -- over 7 1/3 innings.

Cashner, who had struck out 11 in last Friday's win over the Detroit Tigers, worked around nine hits against the Rockies while fanning five.

Colorado starter Jorge De La Rosa tried to keep pace with Casher, yielding three runs (2 earned) over his six innings, but still fell to 0-3.

"You know (Casher) worked his way through the game in a pitchers' duel," Padres manager Bud Black said. "De La Rosa hung in there with him. I thought Cash threw fine. He really made pitches when he needed to. Overall, another well-pitched game."

Tommy Medica hit a solo homer, Chris Denorfia had two RBI and Alexi Amarista scored twice for the Padres, who have won six of their last eight games versus the Rockies.

Justin Morneau went 3-for-3 with a homer and knocked in both Colorado runs, but the club still fell to 2-4 on a seven-game road trip.

"I thought it was as solid outing," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "(De La Rosa) did a nice job to give us a chance to win that game. You don't get a lot of opportunities against (Cashner)."

Franklin Morales will take the mound for Colorado, back in the rotation due to Brett Anderson's finger injury.

Morales began the season as a starter, but went 0-1 in two starts while yielding nine runs over 11 2/3 innings. The left-hander was then moved to the bullpen when Tyler Chatwood returned from a hamstring strain and he made a relief appearance on Sunday versus San Francisco, walking one and striking out two in a scoreless innings.

"That's why Frankie is valuable to us, he can do a number of things," Weiss said on Colorado's website. "He's shown that he can start. We knew he wanted to start. He felt it was an opportunity when he came over here. I have no problem with him making starts for this club."

Morales, 28, is 0-2 with three saves and a 6.28 earned run average in 14 career meetings with the Padres, including one start.

Ian Kennedy hopes to pitch the Padres to the series win and is 1-2 with a 4.24 ERA through three starts.

The 29-year-old righty is coming off a 6-2 loss to Detroit on Saturday as he allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk in six innings. Kennedy did manage to strike out seven.

Kennedy is 3-3 lifetime versus the Rockies with a 2.80 ERA.
