Phillies commence trip against Rockies

Apr 18, 2014 - 12:57 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Phillies will begin a 10-game road trip Friday night with the first of three straight games against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

The Phillies avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves and closed out a nine-game homestand (4-5) with Thursday afternoon's 1-0 win at Citizens Bank Park courtesy of Ben Revere's big day. Revere ended with three hits, none bigger than his RBI single in the eighth inning.

Domonic Brown singled to start the eighth off Braves starter Alex Wood and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wil Nieves. One out later, Ryan Howard drew a walk before Revere singled in a hustling Brown. Phils closer Jonathan Papelbon then struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save.

"We got a good team here from hitting, to the rotation, to the bullpen, so it's just one of those deals that we're going to keep fighting," Revere said, referring to the team's slow start to the season. "We'll come together and when we do, we'll be a tough team to beat."

Antonio Bastardo earned the win after hurling a scoreless eighth and Phillies starter A.J. Burnett showed no signs of a groin issue with seven shutout innings, five strikeouts and two walks. He allowed just three hits.

Philadelphia will also visit Los Angeles and Arizona out west and hopes Jonathan Pettibone can get the trek off to a good start when he toes the rubber Friday in Colorado. Pettibone made his season debut Saturday in a 5-4 win over Miami and did not receive a decision, as he was reached for two runs -- one earned -- and eight hits in five innings.

Pettibone lost his only career start against Colorado last June.

The Rockies are back in the Mile High City after a seven-game trip to San Francisco and San Diego. They went 3-4 on the west coast and earned a split of a four-game series against the Padres with Thursday's 3-1 win.

Franklin Morales threw six innings of one-run ball and scattered four hits for the win and LaTroy Hawkins was the third reliever used, picking up his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.

"That's honestly the best I've ever seen him pitch," Padres outfielder Wil Venable said of Morales.

Nolan Arenado had two hits and an RBI, Justin Morneau drove in a run and scored and Wilin Rosario was credited with the other RBI for Colorado.

Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer was removed from the game in the seventh inning with a cramp in his left hamstring and is considered day-to-day.

"I think it's more toward the tendon," Cuddyer said. "It's not in the belly of my hamstring and I'm not a chronic hamstring guy. All that stuff is encouraging. The strength is good. I did all the strength tests, which is encouraging. The fact I was able to run off the field under my own power, all that stuff is encouraging."

Rockies star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez rested Thursday and should be back in the lineup Friday.

Colorado will host the Giants on this six-game stay and hands the ball to Tyler Chatwood versus the Phils. In his only start of the season Sunday at San Francisco, Chatwood did not factor in the outcome of a 5-4 loss and gave up four runs in six innings.

Chatwood, a right-hander, went 8-5 in 20 starts last season and has a 1-0 record to go with a 3.60 ERA in two career starts against Philadelphia. He has allowed four runs and 10 hits in 10 innings in those outings.

The Rockies lost four of seven meetings with the Phillies last season.
