Rockies rely on Lyles in middle tilt with Phils
Apr 19, 2014 - 1:22 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - First-year Colorado right-hander Jordan Lyles can remain unbeaten with his new team on Saturday night when the Rockies host the Philadelphia Phillies in the second test of a three-game series at Coors Field.The 23-year-old debuted with the Houston Astros in 2011 and remained in Houston through the end of last season before he was acquired by the Rockies in an offseason deal that sent outfielder Dexter Fowler to the Astros.
Lyles was 14-29 in 72 appearances with Houston.
He's been the beneficiary of increased run support since he's changed uniforms. The Rockies have hit .367 in seven home games and have scored at least eight runs in five home wins.
In his last appearance, he allowed three runs on six hits in five innings of Colorado's 5-4 loss at San Diego.
Lyles has posted a 4.09 earned run average and no decisions in two career starts against the Phillies.
He'll be opposed by Philadelphia righty Kyle Kendrick, who's never lost in five starts at Coors Field.
Kendrick has won just one decision in those starts, however, and has posted a 5.83 ERA while the Rockies have connected for a .331 batting average.
In his last start, Kendrick allowed two runs on six hits in six innings of a no-decision in the Phillies' 4-3 defeat of Miami on Sunday.
On Friday, Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBI as the Rockies opened the series with a 12-1 rout.
Colorado scored four times in the first inning and three in the second off Phillies starter Jonathan Pettibone (0-1), who labored through four innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits.
Charlie Blackmon and Drew Stubbs had three hits apiece and Wilin Rosario drove in a three runs to help the Rockies.
Tyler Chatwood (1-0) needed just 88 pitches to get through seven strong innings for Colorado. The 24-year-old righty struck out six, allowing just two hits and an unearned run.
The Rockies lost four of seven meetings with the Phillies last season.
