D'backs turn to Collmenter at Chavez Ravine
Apr 20, 2014 - 10:48 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks give Josh Collmenter another shot on Sunday when they wrap up a three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.Collmenter started the season in the D'backs' bullpen, but due to problems within the starting staff manager Kirk Gibson gave him a start on Tuesday against the New York Mets. He absorbed the loss in that one - his first start since 2012 - and allowed three runs and five hits in four innings,
"Well, not good enough," Gibson said of Collmenter's performance. "He didn't get the ball exactly where he wanted it. Balls were up in the zone out over the plate, but they swung the bats well. We asked him to do a lot. I didn't think he was really in sync tonight, but he went out there and busted his tail."
Los Angeles, meanwhile, will counter with righty Josh Beckett, who has yet to record a decision in two starts this season, but is coming off a solid effort his last time out. Beckett held the San Francisco Giants scoreless over five innings on Tuesday, despite issuing five walks and saw his ERA dip to 4.00.
"I made two of four pitches I needed to make," said Beckett. "I burned myself in the fourth inning with a lot of taxing pitches. It would have been nice to give the bullpen more of a breather."
Beckett is 2-5 lifetime versus Arizona with a 3.90 ERA.
Los Angeles continued its dominance of the Diamondbacks on Saturday, as Andre Ethier clubbed a three-run homer and the Dodgers used a five-run fifth inning to post an 8-6 win.
Adrian Gonzalez and Matt Kemp each went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Dodgers, who have beaten Arizona six out of the seven meetings this season. Gonzalez has now hit safely in 14 straight games.
"We got big hits tonight, a lot of hits back-to-back when we needed it," said Kemp. "(Haren) did a great job. He hit his spots and helped offensively too. (Ethier's) home run energized us."
Dan Haren (3-0) earned the win for LA, throwing 7 1/3 innings and allowing five runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with five strikeouts.
"I was trying to attack the strike zone," said Haren. "Everything that could go wrong went wrong in the third but our offense stepped up and got some good at-bats. I was able to get through seven. I was happy to give our bullpen a little rest."
Martin Prado and Paul Goldschmidt each had two RBI for the Diamondbacks, who saw starter Mike Bolsinger (0-1) surrender seven runs -- six earned -- over four-plus innings of work.
