Rockies hit five home runs in rout of Giants
Apr 22, 2014 - 5:47 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Charlie Blackmon homered twice to lead the Colorado Rockies to an 8-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday in the opener of a three-game set.Nolan Arenado, Wilin Rosario and Corey Dickerson also hit home runs in the win, Colorado's fourth in its last five games. Arenado extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
"I really wanted to win the first game of the series and I think we did a really good job of that," said Blackmon. "We pitched it really well, played some good defense, turned some good double plays (and) swung the bats with people on base. I think it was a really good game to start a series with."
Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa (1-3) pitched five innings and allowed one run with five strikeouts and two walks to earn his first win of the season.
De La Rosa had a 1-4 record with a 7.36 ERA over his last seven starts against the Giants entering the game.
Ryan Vogelsong (0-1) lasted just 1 1/3 innings and was charged with five runs on six hits with three walks in the start for San Francisco, which has lost four of its last five.
On the contrary to De La Rosa, Vogelsong entered his start with a 5-1 mark and a 3.06 ERA against the Rockies, while holding Colorado hitters to a .199 batting average in eight career starts.
Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt each collected two hits in the setback.
"We had our chances to get back in the game, but we just couldn't get a hit to get it going," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "(In) this ballpark anything can happen."
Colorado pounced on Vogelsong early, with Arenado giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead after his homer to left in the bottom of the first.
Troy Tulowitzki then walked with two outs before Justin Morneau doubled to right. Rosario followed with a laser to left that gave the hosts a 4-0 lead after an inning of play. Blackmon added a solo shot in the second to make it a 5-0 game.
Vogelsong then allowed a single to Arenado, induced a flyout from Carlos Gonzalez and walked Tulowitzki, which spelled an end to his night. David Huff entered in relief and got Morneau to ground into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.
With no outs and bases loaded in the top of the third, Buster Posey stepped to the dish and grounded into a 4-6-3 double play which pushed a run across for the visitors. De La Rosa struck out Michael Morse in the next at-bat to escape the inning.
Corey Dickerson pounded a two-run shot in the third and Blackmon homered again in the eighth to push the lead to 8-1.
Belt singled to lead off the top of the ninth and later scored on a throwing error from Colorado pitcher Chad Bettis to account for the final margin.
