Giants, Rockies close set at Coors Field
Apr 23, 2014 - 2:35 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Cain is still searching for his first win of the season and will take the mound Wednesday afternoon for the San Francisco Giants in the finale of a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies.Cain is 0-3 in four starts, but has a respectable 2.88 earned run average. The Giants haven't given Cain much run support with seven total runs in his appearances. Cain allowed one unearned run over seven innings in last Friday's 2-1 loss at San Diego.
The right-hander is 0-2 in three road starts and has faced Colorado 32 times in his career, going 17-8 with a 3.15 earned run average.
San Francisco has lost two in a row and five of six games, and suffered a 2-1 setback Tuesday at Coors Field. Madison Bumgarner went the distance for a visiting pitcher and allowed both runs in eight innings with six strikeouts and one walk.
"You have to make pitches," said Bumgarner. "The one to Tulowitzki kind of came back over the middle and Arenado, (I) was just trying to get a fastball down and away, but ended up throwing it middle."
Hunter Pence had two hits, including a home run in the fifth inning.
The Giants are 1-4 on a six-game trip and will return to the Bay area for six straight games versus Cleveland and San Diego.
Colorado has won two in a row and five of six games, and will wrap up a six- game homestand Wednesday afternoon.
Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado each hit a solo home run, while starting pitcher Franklin Morales got the win after he limited the visitors to a run and five hits in seven innings of work. He fanned seven batters and walked two. LaTroy Hawkins got the final two outs in the ninth for his sixth save.
Arenado is riding a 13-game hitting streak and is batting .365 with two homers and seven RBI in that span.
"It's the close games that separate teams," said Arenado. "You can always feel good when you're up by five, but when it's crunch time that's when the colors really show and we showed it today."
The Rockies will start a six-game road trip against Los Angeles and Arizona at the end of the week.
Tyler Chatwood draws the start for Colorado Wednesday and he is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts. He did not record a decision at San Francisco on April 13, then gave up only an unearned run over seven innings in last Friday's 12-1 pounding of Philadelphia.
Chatwood has 11 strikeouts in two outings and is 3-2 with a 2.73 ERA in seven career games (6 starts) against the Giants.
Colorado lost two of three to the Giants earlier this month by the bay and went 7-3 against them at Coors Field last season.
