Tigers top White Sox to split series
Apr 24, 2014 - 11:01 PM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs and Rajai Davis had three hits, including a solo homer, to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 7-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.Max Scherzer (2-1) had 10 strikeouts in six innings and the Tigers banged out 13 hits to earn a split of the four-game series.
Scherzer gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk and raised his strikeout total to 44 in 33 innings this season.
"I did a good job of pitching with runners on base and I was able to get strikeouts when I needed to," said Scherzer.
Adam Dunn homered for the White Sox and Jose Quintana (1-2) took the loss in six innings after yielding three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
The Tigers went 5-4 on a homestand and the White Sox finished off a 3-4 road trip.
"We had opportunities," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura. "They took advantage of theirs with (Quintana). He pitched a good ballgame and he deserved better. But what can you say? Max (Scherzer) got us when he needed to."
Dunn, who hit a two-run homer in his previous at-bat in the ninth inning of Chicago's 8-6 loss on Tuesday, cracked a 91 mph Scherzer fastball over the right-center field wall in the second inning.
But Detroit tied the game in the bottom of the second and took the lead for good in the third.
Austin Jackson tripled with two outs in the second after right-fielder Dayan Viciedo over ran the ball and Nick Castellanos followed with an RBI single.
Ian Kinsler hit a two-out single in the third inning, went to second base on a wild pitch and scored on Cabrera's single to give the Tigers the lead.
Davis' two-out homer to left field in the fifth gave Detroit a 3-1 advantage and came after Danny Worth was caught trying to steal second base after hitting a single.
Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter lost Viciedo's fly ball leading off the sixth inning and Viciedo raced around the bases for a triple, then scored on Alexei Ramirez's sacrifice fly to get the White Sox within a run.
Bryan Holaday hit a one-out single off Maikel Cleto in the seventh inning and later scored on Cabrera's two-run single up the middle off Daniel Webb, which gave the Tigers a 5-2 lead.
Ramirez hit an RBI single off Joba Chamberlain to highlight a two-run eighth inning for the White Sox. Viciedo scored the second run from third base after Holaday made a bad throw to second trying to catch Alejandro De Aza stealing.
But the Tigers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning on Holaday's single and Davis' double.
Joe Nathan pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season, walking Marcus Semien with one out. The game ended with a double play when Jose Abreu struck out swinging and was called for batter interference for obstructing Holaday on a throw to second as Semien attempted a steal.
