Royals turn to Guthrie against Orioles
Apr 26, 2014 - 3:10 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Ex-Oriole Jeremy Guthrie makes the start for Kansas City on Saturday night when the Royals visit Baltimore in the second game of a three-game series at Camden Yards.Guthrie made 153 starts and appeared in relief eight times for the Orioles between 2007 and 2011, but faced his former team twice last season and won both starts while toting a stingy 1.50 earned run average.
He's reached the sixth inning in three of four starts this season, but has surrendered four runs three times, too.
A 4-3 loss at Cleveland was the result on Monday after he'd given up 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
"The two (two-run) homers are what did the damage," manager Ned Yost said. "Outside of that, I thought he threw the ball well."
Lefty Wei-Yin Chen takes the ball for the Orioles for the fifth time and aims for a fourth straight victory.
The Taiwan-born 28-year-old has allowed eight runs in 16 1/3 innings in his last three outings, emerging most recently with a 7-6 defeat of Boston on Monday at Fenway Park.
He's started four times in his career against Kansas City and is 0-1 with a 5.18 ERA.
Most recently, he allowed three runs in 7 1/3 innings of the Orioles' 4-3 loss to the Royals last July.
On Friday, Yordano Ventura hurled eight scoreless innings to lead the Royals to a 5-0 win in the series opener.
Ventura (2-1) scattered seven hits and two walks while fanning eight to earn the win. He's allowed just five runs over four starts this season to lower his ERA to 1.80.
Billy Butler had two hits and two RBI while Alex Gordon, Omar Infante and Nori Aoki provided one RBI apiece for the Royals, who had dropped four of five.
Ubaldo Jimenez (0-4) allowed all four runs on six hits and four walks over six-plus innings to remain winless on the season.
Orioles first baseman Chris Davis left the game between the fourth and fifth innings with a left oblique strain. The slugger grimaced following a swing in the third inning. He was 0-for-2 with a strikeout.
Baltimore finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base.
The Royals won four of seven versus the Orioles a season ago.
