Markakis sends Orioles past Royals in 10 innings

Apr 27, 2014 - 4:07 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Markakis laced a line drive down the left-field line to bring home the game-winning run in the 10th inning as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Kansas City Royals, 3-2, at Camden Yards.

Jonathan Schoop was hit by a pitch by reliever Danny Duffy (1-1) to start the frame. David Lough laid down a bunt to Duffy, whose throw missed second, allowing men on first and second with no outs. The Orioles loaded the bases after Jemile Weeks put down a bunt towards third base. Duffy scooped up the ball, but his throw was again off the mark.

"I just didn't make the throw," said Duffy on his throwing errors. "I failed tonight. We will get after it tomorrow like I said. We have a lot of games to play."

Louis Coleman came on to pitch and struck out Nelson Cruz before Markakis provided the Orioles with their third win in their past four games. Weeks and Markakis had two hits apiece and Adam Jones drove in a run.

The Orioles were victorious despite not having Chris Davis in the lineup. The All-Star first baseman strained his left oblique after a third-inning lineout in Friday's game. He is expected to land on the 15-day disabled list after MRI results showed that the injury is more serious than originally thought.

"It's kind of crazy because I don't feel terrible. I've never had anything like this before, " said Davis. "Hopefully, it will be just a few days and we will forget about it."

Zach Britton (3-0) struck out a batter in the 10th to strand a runner at second and earn the victory. Starter Wei-Yin Chen surrendered two runs on nine hits with six strikeouts across seven solid innings.

Salvador Perez supplied three hits while Eric Hosmer and Justin Maxwell each had an RBI. Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie spun seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts as Kansas City lost for the third tie in four contests.

The rubber match of the three-game series will be played on Sunday.

Baltimore jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. Weeks' single to center led off the frame. Guthrie then issued a walk to Cruz before Markakis brought Weeks around with a line-drive single to center. Jones scored Cruz after grounding into a force out.

With one out gone in the top of the third, Alcides Escobar stroked a line drive down the left-field line for a stand-up double. Norichika Aoki came up next and laid down a perfect bunt towards third base to put runners on the corners. After Omar Infante was out on a pop-up in foul territory, Hosmer smacked a line drive off the wall in right to score Escobar. Chen intentionally walked Billy Butler to load the bases and got Alex Gordon to ground out to end the frame.

Maxwell's soft flyball single to center brought Gordon home to tie the game 2-2 in the sixth.

Evan Meek came on to pitch the eighth for the O's. Perez greeted him with a single and moved to second on a Jarrod Dyson pinch-hit, sacrifice bunt. Brian Matusz took the mound and got pinch-hitter Mike Moustakas to ground out, moving Perez to third. Darren O'Day recorded the third out, getting Escobar to fly out to foul territory in left.
