Dodgers close out homestand vs. Rockies

Apr 27, 2014 - 2:40 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Dodgers will try to break even on a 10- game homestand Sunday evening as they battle the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a three-game set between NL West rivals.

The Dodgers have gone 4-5 on the residency and evened this series by taking Saturday night's encounter 6-3. Adrian Gonzalez and Matt Kemp both homered to back seven solid innings of two-run ball by starter Paul Maholm.

"Paul was really good again," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Maholm. "He kept us in the game. He got us into the seventh. He did his job."

Yasiel Puig added a pair of RBI and a run scored while Hanley Ramirez also knocked in a run before aggravating a right thumb injury.

Ramirez is day-to-day and is unlikely to play on Sunday, though today's finale was already set to be a scheduled day off for the shortstop.

Brandon Barnes and Justin Morneau registered an RBI apiece for Colorado, which had won three of four and six of eight coming in.

Rockies starter Juan Nicasio surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks in just 4 1/3 frames to absorb the loss.

"I didn't have good command of my fastball," Nicasio admitted. "I got behind hitters. I have to have better command of my fastball. Then I can throw strikes."

Hyun-Jin Ryu will make what will already be his seventh start of the season for the Dodgers and he is off to a 3-1 start with a 2.12 earned run average. The left-hander has yielded two runs or fewer in five of his outings and has yet to give up a home run.

After winning back-to-back starts, Ryu had to work out of some trouble in Tuesday's no-decision versus Philadelphia. He allowed nine hits and a pair of walks, but was able to limit the damage to two runs in a game his club lost 3-2.

"Ryu was really good tonight but wasn't as sharp as he's been," Mattingly said.

The 27-year-old is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in his career versus the Rockies, who will send out a southpaw of their own today in Jorge De La Rosa.

De La Rosa lost three straight decisions over his first four starts before getting his first win on the season on Monday versus San Francisco. The 33- year-old limited the Giants to a run on five hits and three walks over five innings.

De La Rosa is 1-3 with a 6.38 ERA on the season and 2-8 lifetime versus the Dodgers with a 5.99 ERA in 16 games, with 12 starts.

The Rockies held a slim 10-9 advantage over the Dodgers in last season's series, winning six of 10 in Los Angeles.
