Yanks capitalize on Angels' bullpen meltdown
Apr 28, 2014 - 6:13 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacoby Ellsbury scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning and the New York Yankees edged the LA Angels of Anaheim 3-2 in the rubber match of a three-game series.Ellsbury walked to lead off the eighth against reliever Michael Kohn (1-1), who also walked Carlos Beltran with one out. Nick Maronde took over on the mound and a passed ball preceded the wild pitch.
David Robertson pitched around a one-out walk in the ninth to earn his fourth save.
New York starter Masahiro Tanaka didn't have the same sharpness he displayed in his first four major-league outings and was in line for his first regular- season loss since Aug. 19, 2012, while pitching in Japan before Mark Teixeira tied the game at 2-2 with a leadoff home run to right field in the seventh.
Tanaka allowed two runs on five hits and recorded 11 strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings, but walked four and hit a batter. He entered play with just two walks this season.
"I think it shows you how he has the ability when he doesn't have his great command and maybe doesn't have his great stuff that he still finds a way to get through innings, and that's what he did tonight," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Tanaka.
Adam Warren (1-1) picked up the win in relief, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
The home run by Teixeira was the first one given up by Angels starter Garrett Richards this season. Richards allowed only two other hits, walked two and fanned seven in seven frames of work.
The Angels loaded the bases with one out in the fourth and got on the board against Tanaka with a fielder's-choice groundout by J.B. Shuck.
New York drew even in the fifth. Teixeira led off with a walk and took third on a one-out Brian Roberts double before scoring on a groundout by Ichiro Suzuki.
David Freese crushed Tanaka's first pitch in the sixth over the wall in right- center field to put the Angels back on top.
Game Notes
Tanaka set a new Yankees record for the most strikeouts in his first five starts with 46 ... Angels center fielder Mike Trout was 2-for-4 and has hit safely in 16 of his 18 career games against the Yankees ... The Angels were 0- for-8 with runners in scoring position, while New York was 0-for-5 in such situations.
