Royals rally past Blue Jays

Apr 30, 2014 - 6:52 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Salvador Perez went 2-for-4 with a two- run homer and four RBI to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 10-7 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game set.

Perez highlighted a six-run eighth inning with a two-run double off Sergio Santos.

Omar Infante added two RBI while Nori Aoki and Jarrod Dyson finished with an RBI apiece for the Royals, winners in three of their last four games.

Aaron Crow (1-1) earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning. Kansas City starter Jason Vargas allowed five runs on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer and Jose Bautista added a solo shot for the Blue Jays, losers in five of their last six games.

Brett Cecil (0-2) was charged with the loss after giving up back-to-back singles to open the eighth inning. Both runners came around on Perez's two-run double.

"We just got hit tonight," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of his relievers.

Toronto opened up a 5-2 lead in the seventh inning when Colby Rasmus led off the frame with a double and moved to third on Chris Getz's sacrifice bunt. Jose Reyes then laced a single to left field to score Rasmus. Melky Cabrera followed with a double to center to bring Reyes around.

Perez brought the Royals within a run in the home half. Alex Gordon doubled to open the frame and knock starter Dustin McGowan from the game. Perez then fouled off six pitches before crushing a 93 mph fastball over the wall in left off Steve Delabar.

"They made a mistake on a fastball a little inside and up and I hit it pretty good," Perez said.

The Royals then rallied for six runs in the eighth inning. Hosmer and Butler opened the eighth with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. Cecil fanned Alex Gordon before he was replaced by Santos.

Perez then sent a soft grounder down the line in left to score Hosmer and Jimmy Paredes, who replaced Butler on the bases. Cabrera fielded the ball, but missed the cutoff man allowing Paredes to score easily.

Santos then struck out Mike Moustakas before walking Alcides Escobar. Dyson knocked Santos from the game with his RBI single to right field.

Aoki greeted Esmil Rogers with a single to score Escobar and Infante capped the frame with a two-run single to make it 10-5.

Encarnacion belted a two-run homer off Louis Coleman in the ninth to account for the final difference.

Bautista gave the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead after blasting his eighth homer of the season over the wall in left field.

The Royals scored a pair of runs in the second thanks to sloppy play from the Blue Jays. With runners on the corners and one out, McGowan threw a wild pitch, allowing Butler to score.

With runners on the corners and two outs later in the frame, Escobar stole second. Catcher Dioner Navarro's throw sailed into center to allow Gordon to score for a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth, Reyes doubled then scored on Cabrera's triple. Cabrera scored on Vargas' wild pitch in the next at-bat to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 edge.
