Rockies target sweep of Diamondbacks
Apr 30, 2014 - 2:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies target a series sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks when they close out a three-game set Thursday at Chase Field. The Rockies took Monday's opener by an 8-5 score, then handed the Diamondbacks a 5-4 loss Tuesday night behind Drew Stubbs' leadoff home run in the top of the ninth inning. Stubbs came on as a pinch-hitter and went deep off Arizona reliever Addison Reed.
"That last one was a slider out over the plate and I was able to put a good swing on it," Stubbs said.
LaTroy Hawkins worked around two hits in the bottom of the ninth to record his ninth save. Boone Logan was credited with the win even though he allowed the game-tying run in the eighth inning and starter Tyler Chatwood did not record a decision with five innings of three-run ball, four strikeouts and three walks. Chatwood left the game because of tightness in his right elbow and will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.
Troy Tulowitzki homered and was one of four players with two hits. Justin Morneau, Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez all posted a pair of hits for the Rockies, winners in three straight and nine of 12 games. Tulowitzki has homered in back-to-back games with five RBI in that span.
Colorado will start a six-game homestand Thursday versus the New York Mets and Texas Rangers.
Jordan Lyles will try to keep his unbeaten record intact when he toes the rubber for the Rockies Wednesday. Lyles is 3-0 with a 2.93 earned run average in five starts and did not receive a decision in Friday's 5-4 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers, holding them to two runs in seven innings.
Lyles has lasted seven innings in each of his previous two outings and Colorado is 4-1 when he toes the rubber. The right-hander is winless (0-2) in three career starts against the D'Backs to go with a 10.43 ERA.
Arizona has dropped four in a row and 14 of its last 18 games. Reed gave up the big blast to Stubbs and D'Backs starter Mike Bolsinger was reached for four runs and nine hits in five innings for the no-decision.
"We had a ton of opportunities," D'Backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "We were 1- for-9 with runners in scoring position. We left 11 guys on. Regardless, we had our opportunities. The guys battled their tails off tonight."
A.J. Pollock tied the game with a solo home run in the eighth inning, while Miguel Montero, Eric Chavez and Chris Owings had two hits apiece for Arizona, which fell to an MLB-worst 8-22.
The D'Backs will start a nine-game road trip Friday against San Diego, Milwaukee and Chicago (White Sox).
Taking the mound for the D'Backs on Wednesday and will make his fourth start since coming out of the bullpen to replace Randall Delgado. Collmenter is coming off a strong showing in Friday's 5-4 win over Philadelphia and he hurled six scoreless innings with five K's and no walks.
Collmenter, a right-hander, ended a personal two-game slide and is 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in seven games (3 starts) this season. Collmenter owns a 2-1 record and a 3.92 ERA in 15 career games (5 starts) against the Rockies.
The Rockies opened their home schedule against Arizona earlier this month and won two out of three in that series.
