Cardinals beat Brewers to avoid sweep

May 1, 2014 - 12:57 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Allen Craig went 4-for-5 with a solo homer and three RBI in the St. Louis Cardinals' 9-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.

Matt Adams hit a three-run homer for the Cardinals, who avoided a three-game sweep. Jon Jay went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

St. Louis starter Shelby Miller (3-2) remained unbeaten in his career against Milwaukee, giving up three runs on six hits with three walks over six-plus innings. The right-hander improved to 5-0 lifetime against the Brewers.

"It was good to see all aspects of our game click today," Adams said. "When we click with everything, we're a good team. The first two games of this series were extra innings, and we kept battling. We just ran into a hot team, and everything is clicking for them right now. If we continue playing like we have the last couple of days, I think we'll be fine."

Mark Reynolds and Carlos Gomez homered for Milwaukee, which went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine.

Milwaukee starter Matt Garza (1-3) left in the fourth inning with a right thumb contusion. Prior to the injury, he gave up five runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

"It's been a consistent battle for me so far this year," Garza said. "I don't know if it's me fighting myself or me trying to do too much or what it is, but it needs to stop."

Wei-Chung Wang replaced Garza and allowed four runs on six hits over three innings.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jay hit a one-out double to left-center field and raced home on Matt Holliday's single to center.

Reynolds hit a two-run shot in the second to put the Brewers in front. Gomez added a solo homer in the third to make it 3-1.

But the Cardinals took the lead back in the bottom half of the third. Jay walked and Holliday singled before Adams homered to right, making it a 4-3 contest.

St. Louis tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Garza exited after walking Matt Carpenter. Wang came in and put men on the corners with two outs. Craig followed with a two-run double to right.

Miller and Jay each hit RBI doubles in the fifth, and Craig led off the sixth with a homer to center.
