Hudson shines as Giants edge Padres

May 1, 2014 - 6:30 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tim Hudson spun 8 2/3 strong innings to guide the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Hudson (4-1) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six without issuing a walk to pick up his second straight win. Sergio Romo recorded the final out of the game to pick up his seventh save of the season.

"I was able to get down in the strike zone and stay down in the zone, work ahead in the count," Hudson said. "Guys were making some good plays behind me. It was a fun night for us."

Buster Posey went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Brandon Hicks hit a solo homer for the Giants, winners in six of their last seven games.

Yasmani Grandal went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and Alexi Amarista added an RBI for the Padres, who have dropped two straight.

"We're battling, we're playing hard, we're not swinging the bats," Padres manager Bud Black said. "I'd like to think that our average will come up. The pitching's been outstanding overall. The bullpen's been solid, and the starters pretty much have done their part. We've got to get the bats going."

Robbie Erlin (1-3) allowed all three runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings to absorb the loss.

The Padres pushed a run across in both the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 edge.

In the first, Hunter Pence singled and stole second before scoring on Michael Morse's double to right.

Hicks led off the second with a homer to right.

In the seventh, Joaquin Arias singled and moved to second on Hudson's sacrifice bunt. After Juan Perez grounded out, Pence singled to put runners on the corners and Posey followed with an RBI single to center for a 3-0 margin.

San Diego got on the board in the eighth as Cameron Maybin scored on Amarista's groundout.

Grandal added a homer with two outs in the ninth to pull the Padres within 3-2 and knock Hudson out of the game, but Romo got Chris Denorfia to ground out to seal the win.
