Marlins hang on to sweep Braves

May 2, 2014 - 6:46 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGehee hit RBI singles in the seventh inning to lift the Miami Marlins to a 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night in the finale of a three-game series.

The Marlins won all three games to sweep the Braves at home for the first time since June 13-15, 2006.

Steve Cishek struck out Ramiro Pena after the Braves loaded the bases in the eighth inning and threw a perfect ninth to earn a four-out save, his sixth of the season.

Garrett Jones hit a solo homer for the Marlins, who have completed two sweeps in a row at home after downing Seattle in three games from April 18-20.

"It's huge for us," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "It's fun to watch (the players) talk and communicate and figure out how to win a ballgame. We got some big hits, some good defense and good pitching."

B.J. Upton hit a three-run homer and Evan Gattis had a solo blast for Atlanta, which was swept on the heels of a four-game winning streak.

Marlins righty Henderson Alvarez gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks in six innings, striking out four. Mike Dunn (3-3) relieved him and got the win with a perfect seventh.

Braves right-hander Ervin Santana pitched six innings and left with a 4-3 lead after giving up five hits and three walks while striking out five.

Atlanta reliever Ian Thomas (1-1) gave up consecutive singles to Reed Johnson and Christian Yelich in the seventh and was replaced by David Carpenter with one out.

Stanton and McGehee greeted Carpenter with back-to-back base hits through the right side, each knocking in a run to give the Marlins their 5-4 lead.

"The way they scored in the seventh inning, they got a couple balls to drop and they got some ground balls that got through the infield off of Carpenter," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We had some opportunities. Now we take a flight home and stop this losing streak."

Earlier, Derek Dietrich hit a one-out single in the first inning and scored on McGehee's double off the left-center field wall as Miami took an early 1-0 lead.

Jones cracked a 2-0 changeup into the second deck above right field leading off the second inning for his fifth homer of the season, but the Braves took the lead on Upton's three-run blast to left in the third inning.

The Braves won a replay challenge before Upton's homer, successfully arguing that Jason Heyward was safe on a head-first slide at first base.

Gattis led off the sixth inning with his seventh homer of the season, hitting a slider into the Braves bullpen behind left field for a 4-3 Atlanta lead.
