Marlins send Fernandez to hill versus Dodgers

May 4, 2014 - 2:49 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Fernandez will try to remain unbeaten for his career at home as he gets the call for the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series versus the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fernandez has not allowed a run in back-to-back outings, both victories over Atlanta. He hurled eight innings and struck out 14 in a road win on April 22, then tossed another eight frames of three-hit ball on Tuesday. The righty struck out eight.

Fernandez moved to 4-1 on the season with a 1.59 earned run average and has struck out 55 over 39 2/3 innings.

"We needed him to go out there and log some big innings, and that's back-to- back great starts against a great offensive team," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Fernandez.

The 21-year-old is 12-0 with a 1.00 ERA in 19 career starts at home, the fourth pitcher since 1900 to win each of his first 12 decisions at home.

Over his last nine starts at Marlins Park, Fernandez is 8-0 with a 0.43 ERA, having allowed three runs over 62 2/3 frames.

Fernandez has won both of his previous career starts against the Dodgers with a 3.00 ERA.

With Hyun-Jin Ryu on the disabled list with left shoulder inflammation, the Dodgers will start Stephen Fife in today's finale.

Fife will be summoned from Triple-A Albuquerque, where he has gone just 1-4 with a 7.08 ERA this year. However, the 27-year-old righty went 4-4 with a solid 3.86 ERA in 12 games (10 starts) with Los Angeles last season.

Fife will face the Marlins for the first time.

Carl Crawford hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning on Saturday night to give the Dodgers a 9-7 win. His first homer of the season came off Carlos Marmol and followed a leadoff walk by Juan Uribe.

Yasiel Puig hit a three-run homer in the Dodgers' fifth victory in seven games, while Dee Gordon had a big game with five hits, three stolen bases and two RBI.

"You can't ask a whole lot more of him," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Gordon.

Marcel Ozuna hit a three-run blast and Jeff Mathis and Jeff Baker each added a solo home run for Miami, which rebounded from 7-3 down going into the seventh inning to force extra innings before having a four-game win streak halted.

"It just shows you the fight that those guys have," said Redmond. "Nobody is in there giving up, guys keep battling and putting good at-bats together. I don't think anybody felt like we were out of that game."

The Dodgers won five of the seven meetings with the Marlins last season.
