Gyorko's 2 HRs, 6 RBI carries Padres over Marlins
May 10, 2014 - 7:02 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jedd Gyorko belted a pair of homers, including a grand slam, and had a career-best six RBI, as the San Diego Padres pounded the Marlins, 10-1, to snap Miami's five-game winning streak.Tyson Ross (4-3) fanned eight batters and allowed four hits and a run over seven innings to record his fourth win in his last six starts.
"I had a good slider going," Ross said. "I was able to spot up with some fastballs. The defense was working. The offense gave me an early lead and broke it open."
Seth Smith went 3-for-5 with a two-run double for the Padres, who snapped a three-game skid and won for just the third time in 10 games.
Jose Fernandez (4-2) was shelled for six hits and six runs -- five earned -- in five-plus innings.
Marcell Ozuna homered for Miami in the second installment of this four-game series. The Marlins lost for only the second time in 11 contests.
"We haven't had a game like that for a long time," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "We'll turn the page and move on."
An error on first baseman Garrett Jones allowed Yasmani Grandal to reach safely to start the home second. Gyorko followed with a homer to right field.
Singles from Everth Cabrera, Smith and a walk to Grandal started what would be a six-run sixth inning. Gyorko then smashed a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left.
Brad Hand replaced Fernandez, but gave up three straight hits with Alexi Amarista's RBI single providing a 7-0 cushion. Will Venable's sacrifice fly later in the frame capped the rally.
Ozuna homered to left in the seventh inning, but Smith stroked a two-run double off the wall in center in the eighth.
Game Notes
The six RBI ties the Padres franchise record for most by a second baseman in a single game ... Gyorko logged the second multi-home run game of his career ... Giancarlo Stanton nearly made a great catch against the wall in the bottom of the third inning on a ball hit by Smith. It turned into a triple.
- SDfaninLA Let's hope this is a turning point for our season offensively. Go Padres!
