Howard's 9th-inning hit the difference as Phils clip Mets
May 11, 2014 - 5:44 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Howard registered four hits, including a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth inning that sent the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 triumph over the New York Mets in the second tilt of a three-game set Saturday at Citi Field. With the game tied 4-4, Jimmy Rollins worked a two-out walk off Kyle Farnsworth (0-3) and Chase Utley singled before Howard stroked a single to center, scoring Rollins easily to break the deadlock.
"Big night for the three guys in our lineup. Rollins, Utley and Howard combined for nine hits, four runs and four RBI," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "They carried the load for the offensive side of things."
Jonathan Papelbon worked around a two-out walk in the bottom of the ninth to nail down his 11th save of the season. Mike Adams (2-1) picked up the win after working out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.
Rollins smacked a solo homer among his three hits and scored four times, while Domonic Brown added an RBI single for the Phillies, who have won two straight on the heels of a four-game slide.
David Wright launched a two-run homer and drove in three runs for the Mets, who have lost five straight and eight of their last nine games.
"It's frustrating losing," said Wright. "Whether you do it 5-4 or 4-3 or 2-1, it doesn't matter. The frustrating part is losing."
Neither starter factored in the decision, as Philadelphia's Kyle Kendrick allowed four runs on four hits over 5 1/3 frames, while New York's Dillon Gee gave up three runs on six hits over six innings.
Gee entered the game riding a 16-inning scoreless streak, but saw it snapped in the opening frame, as Ben Revere and Rollins opened the game with back-to- back singles before Utley's sacrifice fly scored Revere.
Howard then doubled into the gap in left-center field and Marlon Byrd was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brown, who looped a single into shallow center field to score Rollins for a 2-0 lead.
Wright responded for the Mets in the home half, launching a two-run blast deep to left to tie the contest. Daniel Murphy reached on a fielder's choice before trotting home on Wright's second homer of the season.
Rollins crushed a two-out, two-strike homer in the second to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead, but Wright answered again in the sixth.
After Juan Lagares walked and Murphy singled, Wright smacked a soft fly ball down the right-field line. Byrd was unable to make a diving grab on the play, allowing Lagares to score while Murphy moved to third and Wright found second.
Kendrick then fanned Curtis Granderson, but walked Chris Young to load the bases and spell the end of his outing.
Jake Diekman entered from the bullpen and was greeted by pinch-hitter Eric Campbell making his major league debut. In his first big league at-bat, Campbell smacked a sac fly to right, scoring Murphy for a 4-3 lead.
Philadelphia retied the tilt in the seventh when Rollins reached on a one-out infield single and then moved to second on a Scott Rice wild pitch before scoring on Utley's double off the wall in center field.
In the eighth, Adams allowed consecutive singles to Wright and Granderson before Young's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position.
After fanning Campbell, Adams walked Wilmer Flores, but got pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu to tap one back to the mound to end the inning.
Game Notes
Wright's RBI double in the sixth was his 1,600th career hit ... New York finished 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base ... Revere stole his 12th base of the season ... Howard recorded his 21st RBI of the season.
