Mets make a stop in the Bronx
May 12, 2014 - 2:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets will try to get a little momentum going on Monday night as they take aim at a fifth straight victory over the New York Yankees in the opener of the club's annual Subway Series. The Mets will visit the Bronx for the first two games of this series, then welcome the Yankees to Citi Field for a pair of contests beginning on Wednesday. The Mets won all four meetings a season ago after the Yankees had compiled a 9-3 mark in this series in 2011-12.
The Mets are coming off just their second victory in 10 games, snapping a five-game slide with a 5-4 rally over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday in 11 innings.
Trailing in the bottom of the ninth by three runs, Daniel Murphy got the comeback started with a two-run homer and Juan Lagares brought home the tying run on a groundout.
Chris Young later singled to begin the 11th frame, moved to second on Zack Wheeler's bunt and after Lagares was intentionally walked, advanced to third on a single by Anthony Recker. Ruben Tejada then singled home Young for the winning run.
"A lot of times, things like this can kick start a nice little winning streak," said Recker. "You put together a couple of knocks in a big situation, all of sudden your confidence goes up. Hopefully that will continue into the next few games."
The Mets go with veteran Bartolo Colon for tonight's opener, but he has lost two starts in a row.
The right-hander was drilled for seven runs and 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings of a 7-4 loss in Colorado on May 1, but bounced back with a solid outing on Tuesday at Miami. It still resulted in a 3-0 loss, with Colon yielding all three runs on seven hits over seven innings.
Colon, 40, is 2-5 with a 5.36 earned run average on the season and 5-7 with a 5.77 ERA lifetime versus the Yankees, who he made 29 appearances with in 2011.
Countering for the Yankees will be Hiroki Kuroda, who is 2-3 with a 4.43 ERA on the season. He is 0-2 in his last four starts, but did pitch well enough to win last time out.
The 39-year-old righty followed up back-to-back starts with an outing against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday in which he gave up three runs -- one earned -- on five hits over 7 2/3 frames. He struck out eight without a walk in his longest start of the season, with New York winning 4-3.
"It was encouraging tonight watching Hiroki pitch," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "His sinker and slider were working (and) it was nice to get some big hits."
Kuroda has made nine previous starts versus the Mets, going 2-5 with a 4.14 ERA.
The Yankees will try to avoid a third straight loss tonight after dropping the final two contests of a three-game interleague set with the Milwaukee Brewers. Mark Teixeira hit a game-tying home run with two outs in the top of the ninth for the Yanks, but Rickie Weeks scored the winning run in the bottom of the frame for Milwaukee in a 6-5 decision.
Teixeira ended 2-for-4 and scored three times in the loss, with Kelly Johnson and Yangervis Solarte each driving in two runs.
"We weren't able to put multiple hits in innings," Girardi said.
Teixeira has hit six homers with 12 RBI over his last 12 games, batting .304 in that span.
