Cards turn to Wainwright seeking to rebound vs. Cubs
May 13, 2014 - 2:59 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A day after his team surrendered a season-high 17 runs, enter Adam Wainwright.The St. Louis ace takes the mound to stop the bleeding on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium, where the Cardinals will host the suddenly-rampaging Chicago Cubs in game two of a four-game series.
Chicago was 1-7 in its last eight games prior to Monday and had scored only four runs in a three-game series over the weekend in Atlanta in which it was swept.
But things changed in the opener against St. Louis, as Junior Lake tallied six runs batted in and Emilio Bonifacio scored five runs in the Cubs' 17-5 rout. It was the most runs they've scored in a win since 2009.
Lake finished 3-for-6 with a three- run homer and a pair of doubles, while Bonifacio posted four hits for Chicago, which pounded out 20 hits. Mike Olt hit a two-run shot and scored twice, while Travis Wood (3-4) allowed five runs -- four earned -- on five hits and three walks over six frames in the triumph.
Tyler Lyons (0-3) gave up nine runs on nine hits and a walk over four innings for St. Louis.
Wainwright is attempting to become the first seven-game winner in the National League this season.
He's faced Chicago twice already in 2014 and is 1-1, allowing 10 runs in 12 innings against the Cubs -- while compiling a 0.59 earned run average in his other six starts.
The last meeting was a 6-5 loss at Wrigley Field on May 2, in which he allowed 10 hits in five innings.
In his last start, against Atlanta on Wednesday, he gave up just one run in eight innings of a 7-1 victory.
He's opposed by Chicago's Jake Arrieta, who debuted for 2014 with a 3-0 defeat of the Cardinals in which he allowed four hits and struck out seven on May 3.
He also beat St. Louis in his only other career opportunity, tossing seven innings of two-hit ball last August.
On Thursday against the Chicago White Sox, he was nicked for four runs on nine hits in four innings of a game the Cubs ultimately won, 12-5.
The Cardinals and Cubs split six previous meetings this season coming into this series.
