Ortiz hits 2 more HRs as Red Sox beat Twins
May 15, 2014 - 6:01 AM Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - David Ortiz continued to torment his old club, belting two homers for the second straight day, as the Boston Red Sox topped the Minnesota Twins 9-4 at Target Field. The first blast, a no-doubter into the upper deck in right-center field, was Ortiz's 383rd with the Red Sox, passing Jim Rice for the third-most in team history.
Grady Sizemore and A.J. Pierzynski matched Ortiz with two RBI as Boston evened this three-game series after losing 8-6 Tuesday on Chris Parmelee's walk-off home run.
Felix Doubront (2-3) went 6 1/3 innings for the Red Sox, giving up a run on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Minnesota starter Kevin Correia (1-5) surrendered five runs and nine hits in just four innings.
"He's a good hitter and you can't afford to make any mistakes against a guy like that," Correia said of Ortiz. "They are world champions. They are the best team in the world for a reason."
The Red Sox gave Doubront a 2-0 lead before he even took the mound. Shane Victorino hit a one-out single and advanced to third on an Ortiz double before scoring on Mike Napoli's groundout.
Sizemore followed with a double to plate Ortiz, who then crushed a Correia offering with two outs in the third before Sizemore singled home Napoli later in the frame.
Doubront wiggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the home third, allowing just a run on a Joe Mauer sacrifice fly.
The Red Sox then scored a run in each of the next three innings to extend their lead to 7-1.
Ortiz stayed hot and led off the fifth with a drive to right off reliever Caleb Thielbar.
"He's in one of those stretches right now where he's obviously seeing the ball well," said Boston manager John Farrell said about Ortiz. "They're throwing pitches on the plate for him and he's not missing them."
Minnesota loaded the bases in the seventh, but reliever Burke Badenhop got Mauer to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Pierzynski knocked in a pair with a bases-loaded double in the ninth to make it 9-2.
Trevor Plouffe belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning for Minnesota.
Game Notes
Ortiz now has 43 multi-homer games in his career ... Twins designated hitter Kurt Suzuki extended his hitting streak against the Red Sox to eight games with a fourth-inning single ... The Twins were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
