Miller carries winning streak into start against Braves
May 17, 2014 - 1:36 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - St. Louis right-hander Shelby Miller takes a career-best five-game winning streak into Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves at Busch Stadium.Miller's victory surge, which covers his last six starts, beat the Braves in Atlanta on May 5 when he allowed six hits and a pair of runs over five-plus frames. His last defeat came April 9 versus Cincinnati.
In 10 career games (9 starts) against NL East clubs, Miller is 5-2 with a 1.63 ERA. That includes a 2-1 mark with a 2.55 ERA in three games against Atlanta.
Aaron Harang, who counters for the Braves, snapped a personal two-game skid by throwing six solid innings against the Cubs on Sunday. He was matched up with Miller on May 5 and took the loss after yielding four runs -- two earned -- over six innings.
Harang has struggled in his career against the Cardinals as evidenced by a 7-14 mark and a 4.32 ERA in 26 starts. The righty is 0-5 over his last seven appearances against them and hasn't beaten St. Louis since May 9, 2009, which was his 31st birthday.
Allen Craig went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to help the Cardinals hand Ervin Santana his first loss of the season with a 5-2 victory Friday.
St. Louis knocked Santana (4-1) around for five runs on 10 hits over the first five frames en route to the club's third consecutive win.
Lance Lynn (5-2) battled through seven innings despite taking a liner off his left heel in the second frame. He allowed just two runs on seven hits.
"We have a really talented team," Craig said. "We swung the bats well and Lance did a great job out there."
Santana had given up just six runs over his first six starts but yielded three in the fifth inning alone in the opener of this three-game set.
"He's allowed a tough start," Braves third baseman Chris Johnson said of Santana, "He's been so good for us."
St. Louis took two of three from the Braves earlier this season. The Cards have also won 11 of their last 15 at home against Atlanta.
