Haren tries to slow down D'backs' hot bats

May 18, 2014 - 2:40 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Los Angeles righty Dan Haren tries to slow down the suddenly potent Arizona lineup on Sunday when the Dodgers and Diamondbacks close out a three-game series at Chase Field.

Arizona's bats exploded on Saturday, as Paul Goldschmidt finished 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs and six RBI in an 18-7 shellacking of the Dodgers. Martin Prado added three hits and drove in three and Cliff Pennington contributed two RBI for the Diamondbacks, who snapped a two-game slide and beat the Dodgers for only the second time in 10 tries this season.

The Diamondbacks also set franchise records for runs scored, hits in a nine- inning game (21) and extra-base hits (13).

"Anybody they threw at us, we were patient, got good pitches to hit and hammered them," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson.

Chase Anderson (2-0) did enough to snag the win, allowing seven hits and five runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Carl Crawford hit a three-run homer and Yasiel Puig added a two-run blast for the Dodgers, who surrendered a season high run total in losing for the sixth time in their last 10. Andre Ethier knocked in two in defeat.

"Give them a lot of credit they swung the bats extremely well," said Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis. "Anytime we were in the middle of the plate, they didn't miss it. That is what good teams do. That is a good team over there."

Clayton Kershaw (2-1) was rocked for six hits and seven runs while recording only five outs, the second-shortest start of his career.

Now the Dodgers turn to Haren, who is 5-1 with a 2.84 ERA. Haren's resurgence continued against Miami on Monday, as he bounced back from his lone loss of the season to beat the Marlins, holding them to three runs and seven hits in seven innings.

"Typical Dan," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "He stays in the game, keeps making pitches and kind of hangs in there."

Haren has beaten Arizona twice already this season and is 4-1 in five games (4 starts) versus the D'backs with a 3.10 ERA.

Arizona, meanwhile, will turn to righty Josh Collmenter, who is 1-2 with a 3.89 ERA. Collmenter struggled on Monday against Washington, as he was hit for four runs and four hits in five innings. He escaped without a decision, though, in his team's 6-5 loss.

"Colli struggled through five, and didn't have much of changeup tonight, and they pounded three of them," Gibson said of Collmenter.

Collmenter lost to the Dodgers back on April 20 and is just 3-6 in 13 games (5 starts) against them with a 5.21 ERA.
