Brewers go for split in Atlanta
May 22, 2014 - 2:09 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Garza will try to beat Atlanta for the first time in his career and pitch the Milwaukee Brewers to a split of a four-game series with the Braves on Thursday evening.Garza made his Milwaukee debut on April 2 against Atlanta and took a tough- luck setback as he gave up just one run and two hits over eight innings while striking out seven. He still fell to 0-3 in four lifetime encounters with the Braves, posting a 4.50 earned run average.
The 30-year-old righty has allowed three runs in three straight starts overall, going 1-1 in that span. He was solid versus the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, but didn't get any back in a 3-0 loss. Garza yielded four hits and a walk over seven innings with seven strikeouts.
Despite the solid outing, Garza fell to 2-4 on the year with a 4.83 ERA.
Getting the start for the Braves will be right-hander Aaron Harang, who has lost three of his last four starts. However, he has given up two earned runs in three straight outings to sit at 4-4 on the year with a 2.98 ERA.
Harang, 36, took a 4-1 setback at the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. Two of the three runs he allowed were earned and he also yielded six hits over six innings while striking out seven and not walking a batter.
The veteran is 7-6 lifetime versus the Brewers with a 4.01 ERA.
Behind a solid outing by Kyle Lohse and a first-inning grand slam off the bat of Mark Reynolds, the Brewers notched a 6-1 victory last night over the Braves, snapping a season-high four-game slide overall while beating Atlanta for the first time in the last five meetings.
Lohse, whose only loss came April 1 at home against the Braves, remained unbeaten over his last nine starts. The right-hander allowed four hits, including an RBI double to Justin Upton in the opening inning. Lohse also fanned eight without walking a batter and moved to 4-0 in six career starts at Turner Field.
"It was one mistake, really, in that whole game," Lohse said. "I felt like I was trying to run one up and in on Upton. I wasn't trying to throw a strike. A couple of times I've gotten hurt doing that. I've got to do a better job sticking that fastball in there. After that, I just kept going back into a rhythm that I had and making pitches."
Ervin Santana yielded nine hits and six runs over seven frames. He walked four batters and dropped his second consecutive start.
Upton had three of the five hits for Atlanta.
"He was just going in and out," Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said of Lohse. "We were aggressive off of him. We made a lot of mistakes tonight. We just popped them all up it seemed like. I had a few myself tonight. We just didn't get it done tonight."
The Braves had a three-game winning streak snapped.
