Mariners begin lengthy homestand vs. Astros

May 22, 2014 - 2:32 PM (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners return to the great northwest for an 11-game homestand, starting Thursday night against their AL West rivals, the Houston Astros.

The Mariners head back to Safeco Field to begin this four-game series after a 2-3 jaunt through Minnesota and Texas. They will host the Astros, LA Angels of Anaheim and Detroit Tigers on this lengthy stay.

Seattle had won two straight, but fell back under .500 with a 4-3 loss to the Rangers on Wednesday.

Robinson Cano stroked a two-run homer and Michael Saunders brought in a run for Seattle, which entered the game with a two-game win streak. Chris Young (3-2) was tagged for four runs on seven hits with three walks in 6 1/3 frames.

"We are feeling good. We just have to stay positive," said Cano. "We just have to turn the page and go home to try to win some games."

Cano has reached base safely in 28 consecutive games. It is the longest on- base streak of his career and longest active streak in the majors. James Jones went 1-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Roenis Ellis gets the ball on Thursday for the Mariners. He lost his last time out, a 4-3 setback on Saturday against the Twins. Ellis pitched seven innings, but allowed four runs and struck out four.

The Astros continue their 10-game odyssey in Seattle. They owned a three-game winning streak, but dropped their last two in Anaheim, including a 2-1 defeat on Wednesday.

Houston couldn't get to Angels' starter Jered Weaver, other than a fourth- inning solo homer from George Springer, his fourth of the season. Weaver went the distance, allowing just two hits.

Albert Pujols launched his 505th career homer in the sixth to break a tie and propel Anaheim to victory. The loss fell to Collin McHugh (2-3), who gave up just two runs on four hits over seven solid frames.

"(McHugh) was really good tonight, and the other guy was even better," Astros manager Bo Porter said.

Houston hopes Jarred Cosart will get it back in the win column. Cosart has won his last two starts, going 11 innings and allowing five earned runs. He's only struck out five and walked six over the wins, which came against the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox.

The two teams have split six meetings this season, although the Astros, who are last in the AL West, won two of three in Seattle back in April.
